Which make/model do you recommend for a PocketPC PDA remote?

Postby showmethehtpc on Fri Oct 27, 2006 3:49 pm

Hi.

If you wanted to have quick access to your xlobby with a wifi remote control.

Lets say in the case that you had it as a source for a centralized music system.

I am assuming that you would need a wifi windows based pocket PC or at least something that had wifi and web access to access the web based admin screen for the Xlobby?

Are there any recommended makes or models PDA or pocketPC that are generally used for this that are reasonable priced?

If anyone could please let me know, I would sure appreciate it.

Thanks for your help.

Here are some posts on what people recommend:

Actually, I just recently picked up a Dell Axim x3i off ebay for just under $100 for the exact thing you outlined...controlling a central music server. Came with all sorts of goodies. I also picked up an additional cradle to place elsewhere around the house so now we have two locations to charge the PPC.

My only issue is that when first powered up, it takes a little bit of time to access the network. If the Xlobby client starts too early, the PPC locks up and I have to do a soft reset. I'll probably hear more complaints about that when the wife starts to use it more....she's rather impatient. Other than that its working great and fun to use.

Hope this helps.

I have an x30 and x3i as well (as you may read in one of the other posts...) and they both work like a charm. Like marbles says, it's kinda slow on the connecting, but I think you'd get that with any ppc.
If you do get an axim, don't forget to check out http://www.aximsite.com cause they are more helpful than a bag of rice there. :?: Well they're really helpful anyways. And it's a fun place to hang out. (espectially during work 8) )

So do you guys basically have a link to the Xlobby Web Admin page in order to control your xlobby system remotely over the WIFI home network or do you have a client software installed in the PDA?

I'm not sure what the abilities of the windows for PDA have or if it has the ability to install the Xlobby client software?

Please let me know if you could.

Thanks.

installing the client on a ppc is the same as it is on a desktop. Just put the servers.txt and xlobby2sd.exe files in the same folder and then run the xlobby2sd.exe. It's a real nice setup. If you go to the documentation page Steven has written a pretty good tutorial on setting it up on a ppc.
