Internet Information not Updating

Postby Marbles_00 on Thu Jul 21, 2005 5:24 pm

Steve or any other Xlobby guru,

First I'd like to thank you for a wonderful piece of software. Once the basics are learned, it is pretty simple to configure and use, unlike some other frontend programs (*COUGH*Meedio*COUGH*).

I am having a problem when it comes to updating weather or webcam images when the information has to be pulled from the internet. First weather:
I can set up either Xweather or Xoapweather from the Setup panel fine. When I go to display the information, whatever was downloaded from the initial setup is displayed, but I will not get any further updates.

At first I thought there was something wrong with the weather plugins, but the same goes with the webcam information. Again I can retrieve initial images, but the images will not update.

Is there any additional setup required (other than the tutorials about the plugins)?

I first noticed this problem when trying out the HeavyMetal skin and KISS. I've even posted the problem in the plugin forum on two different occasions. They can be found here:
http://www.xlobby.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3377

http://www.xlobby.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3085

I'm running on a Win2k machine with .NET 1.1 with a constant DSL connection. I even downloaded the Xweather plugin update. At first I thought that it might be my firewall, but everyother program is running fine, and the fact that I'm able to download initial information/images would indicate that xlobby can access the internet.

I decided to post here to hopefully get a better response to help fix my problem. Though I'm not having any problems with Samurize, which I have currently set up and using to display weather, I would like to get one of the weather plugins to work to offload the use of another third party program.

Thanks in advance to your response.

A log dump from Xoapweather

Postby Marbles_00 on Fri Jul 22, 2005 12:42 pm

Here is a log dump from Xoapweather as of this morning (22/7/05):
[06:27:28] plugin: Starting XoapWeather Plugin
[06:27:28] plugin: Reading configuration files
[06:27:57] plugin: Starting background weather update thread
[06:27:57] wxupdate: Starting weather forecast data update
[06:27:57] wxupdate: Retrieving weather data for CAXX0184
[06:27:58] wxupdate: Requesting screen update
[06:27:58] wxupdate: Next weather data update at 22/07/2005 6:47:58 AM
[06:28:04] plugin: Parsing: %date% -> Jul 11
[06:28:04] plugin: Parsing: %temperature% -> 24
[06:47:58] wxupdate: Starting weather forecast data update
[06:47:58] wxupdate: Retrieving weather data for CAXX0184
[06:47:59] wxupdate: Requesting screen update
[06:47:59] plugin: Parsing: %date% -> Jul 11
[06:47:59] plugin: Parsing: %temperature% -> 24
[06:48:00] wxupdate: Next weather data update at 22/07/2005 7:07:59 AM
[07:07:59] wxupdate: Starting weather forecast data update
[07:07:59] wxupdate: Retrieving weather data for CAXX0184
[07:08:00] wxupdate: Requesting screen update
[07:08:00] plugin: Parsing: %date% -> Jul 11
[07:08:00] plugin: Parsing: %temperature% -> 24
[07:08:00] wxupdate: Next weather data update at 22/07/2005 7:28:00 AM
But notice that the parsing date still reports July 11 (10 days ago) and the temperature was not 24 degrees C (it was only 21).

I hope this will help out.

Anyone have any other ideas to try or what could be causing any plugin that is supposed to access the internet, not to work after the first time.

Marbles.

I'm wondering if your isp has a proxy...this would be caching the page you requested...and explaining why you always get the same results. I just hit "refresh" for xweather and it worked for me...jumped from 8:14 to 9:21pm....I would expect that if I waited until tomorrow to update it again it would refresh with a new forcast...thats another thing to take into account...how often the forcast is updated.

Actually, I'm starting to wonder if there is a caching issue too. It didn't dawn on me that since the webcam images were always the same as when they were initially downloaded, that Xlobby was pulling in the images from somewhere on my computer. The database for webcam images indicate to go to the web page and grab the images, yet Xlobby is getting the images elsewhere. None of these webcam images are residing in the Xlobby directory.

Steve, I don't think it is my isp that is caching the information otherwise, I would be having problems all over the place with other programs, but does Xlobby utilize Explorer caching? Could Windows be the root of all evil? I'm wondering if I turned off Temporary Internet file storage (or decrease it to zero and clean out the folder), if I will still have these problems? Secondly, how does Xweather and Xoapweather store their related information? I would assume that the plugins call out to the net to pull in information IF REQUIRED, as, if it cannot find the appropriate info in the temorary internet folder. Then we set up a text box in Xlobby to call on the plugin to display this information which the plugin gets from the temporary internet folder.

Am I on to something or has the ganja gone to my head?
