3.0 Skin Migration Issue

Postby PhilB on Fri Nov 28, 2008 12:42 am

Loaded the latest 3.0 version, (3.0.8323.26) copied my working Rev R. skin in and restarted XL 3 to load it. Loading goes all the way to the "images" portion and then fails. Error is standard Windows "Xlobby has encountered an Error and needs to close.

Also, the Setup dialouge shows the version as 2.0.8323.26 instead of 3.0 even though 3.0 is installed.

Any ideas on where to start looking for issues?

Thanks,
PB

I had that too and it turned out it was one of my databses. I thought it stoped on images but after moving all databases xml files, it started up fine. Then I moved them back one after one

the def skin contains alot of folders in the skin dir. Try copy them into your skin. Maybe that will help

I hated to try that since my skin is very clean (no extra files ect...) but I backed it up and tried it. Same failure.

I am going to try just coping my xml pages into a copy of the default skin page to see if the error follows...

Ok. I f I remove all my skin XML files except splash and menu, it runs. Now I have to add them back 1 at a time and fugure out which is causing the crash.

That is not alot of fun. :?

EDIT:
There were 3 XML screens that cause the crash...al related to news feeds. I dont use them much so no big deal but it is strange. I just removed them and all is good to start the migration.

I just ran into a similar situation when I loaded my holiday music library this week. Songs like "Let it snow! Let it snow!" and "Hark! The Herald Angel" made XLobby blow up when it tried to create the XML and ran into the bang (!) character. Hopefully Steve will build some error handling logic into his routines that create the XML databases so it can pop up an "Invalid Character in File Name" warning instead of the entire application barfing and falling over. :?

This happened in 2.0 as well, but less often. YOu should open a ticket on the v3 bug tracking site. There are several being worked.....

Did you notice the weather updates are real slow on 3.0 on your system?

I don't use the default weather plugin as it has a history of breaking way too often. I've been using XoapWeather for nearly 4 years. The fact that it is open source means I can fix it myself if needed - not that I have ever had to.
