off topic wake from hibernate using remote control

Postby lar282 on Fri Jun 04, 2004 11:17 am

Hi
I know it's of topic but I was hoping that somebody knows the answer

Is it possible to wake the computer up from hibernate (not standby) using USB?
Has anybody done this with a X10 remote(if the above answer is yes)?

Thanks in advance

Check your bios and see what wake-up features it has... Check out girder's forums as well!

Look into Wake on USB... Hibernate is a regular shut down and reboot, hardware wise, and the software then restores the saved state. Suspend (standby), is a hardware-based status, and more likely what the bios is talking about.

Why is suspend not good enough?

I use the uirt2 - serial one and it can do up to 4 outputs when the computer is off. I have set it to pulse for .5 of a second (5v) on the one output and connected this to the + side of the on/off switch on the computer. In XP in the control panel you can stipulate what happens when the off button is pressed. I have this set to hibernate. so a push on my remote sends the computer to hibernate and another push brings it out.

I know the usb-uirt was designed by the same guy. Can the reciever do outputs when the computer is off.

BTW I use hibernate and not stand by (which i would prefer as is fast) because the remote reciever refuses to work coming out of stand by BUT works coming out of hibernate.

Later
Simon.

I want hibernate because it's more stable, consumes less power and so on.

Twit thanks. I am getting a uirt2 serial next week(ordered one 3 weeks ago). Glad to here it works from that. Wierd though that it doesn't work from a usb device.

I have the USB UIRT and I use a remote to wake it up from a hibernate state. It works fine, although it also depends on your bios.
I eneded up using hibernate mode since my machine won't wake up from standby from some reason. The only thing that annoys me is that when in hibernate mode the WOL will not work.
