Need XLobby help on a Homeseer/JRiverMC/XLobby question

Postby briguy on Fri Dec 08, 2006 5:57 am

Ok here we go. A friend of mine wrote a full featured J River Media Center 11 plugin that can be controlled with Homeseer (or any other application). I love it and it has become an integral part of my home automation system. I have several RF remotes and keypads controlling music throughout my house. But I have not found the right interface solution for my touchpad. Bascially, I want XLobby to be that solution. Homeseer will be the liaison between both programs. Can XLobby simply send and display music information without creating it's own music database and without calling executables? Essentially, A simple interface to send and receive data. My biggest concerns are displaying search information returned from my friends plugin and displaying cover art. His plugin can return a path to the current songs cover art file, so I want to grab it and display it by sending the path to XLobby.

It doesn't really sound like xlobby is what you're looking for. Xlobby really likes to be controling what music is being played and such. Something that sounds like it might be kinda similar is some Sirius satillite radio plugin. That's another case where xlobby isn't the one playing the music, but I'm not sure if it'll display the correct information.

I disagree...

The beauty of xlobby is that it is basicly just a GUI, like frontend should be. True, it gives u some extra crap which u dont need in your usecase, but good news is that all that, unlike in many other apps, can be easily stripped off.

Now, there is plugins for external communication, but odds are that best solution for u is to make (or have your friend make) propriety com plugin between your friends plugin and xlobby. Good news are Xlobby provides SDK which is very well suited for _this purpose_.

I guess I didn't take into account the ability to make new plugins. yes, with new plugins it can be done pretty simple.
