X10 for dummies :-)

Postby dalanik on Tue Dec 20, 2005 10:22 am

Hi there...

I'm just considering getting into X10 and it's all very confusing for me. I'd just like to be able to control the lights in ONE room (where HTPC is).

I'd like to make it as simple as possible, and avoid using software like homeseer, etc. I don't want radio controlled devices, RF remote control devices (i have remote in XLobby)...

this is what i figured, and I'm asking anyone with knowledge on X10 subject and also xlobby integration to help ! :-)

In my case, for start to control lights in one room:

* i need one controller unit, CM11
http://www.nicoshop.com/cat066_l2.html

* i need one wall switch unit AW10 or LW11
http://www.nicoshop.com/cat067_l2.html

Now....

Whould these modules work with european mains (220W)? I notice in diagrams that the wall switch unit is connected with FOUR wires, while in my home most of the switches are only 2 wires :-)

Are these 2 modules enough, do I need anything else?

Would I be able to control lights with XLobby and xap with this hardware?

Any help appriciated.

disclaimer: I'm no dummy, i'm just software person :-)

Thanx,

Dalibor

I got the cm11 and it works really good with the x10 Xap service together with the Xap3 plugin. I can control and get status.

If you want to have European module look here http://195.95.18.75/english/index.asp, best price in Europe.

Yes those two modules are enough to control one light and CM11 will be a good start to X10 world. The AW10 and LW11 need 4 wires (phase in, neutral in, phase out and neutral out) but neutral out and neutral in are screwed in the same connection hole. Few of us don’t get the neutral behind our switch so X10 have made the LW12 micro module to bypass the problem. You have to connect only 2 wires (phase in and phase out) no neutral needed.

To manage this module, you have 2 light solutions.
If you don’t need feedback information to display on your skin, use the XL internal command, no additional program needed.
If you want to display image or information about your X10 module you have to use XAP3 plugin (few post alreay explain howit work)
