use component, vga or dvi. if you're tv supports it... if not you can use s-video but that is not a good solution.

A little list: Quality (Highest to Lowest)
DVI / HDMI
VGA / RGBVH
Component / YPbPr

S-video (One cable with 4 pins in it)
Composite (The standard single yellow cable)

If you have component use it. I am stuck with composite until I purchase a new tv and even though it's the lowest quality connection XLobby still works great and I can easily browse movies and music.

You can use practically whatever you want to view xlobby on a tv... The only problem with svideo and composite, is that the quality is low, so it is hard to read small text. Otherwise it should work fine.

I suggest heading over to htpcnews.com or avsforums to dig into stuff like this. There's a lot of information out there to help you balance priorities with money with hardware. But here's my quick input based on what I would do today.

1) I love my ATI 9800 Pro but some nVidia 6600GTs have built in component output. But not all of them. I like the sound of that. ATI also has a dongle but it restricts resolutions.

2) Hauppauge tuner cards are some of the best standard def hardware encoding cards. I recommend looking into the PVR150s if you use windows and the PVR250s if you use linux. The 150 is actually newer and cheaper but the 250 has broader support and linux support. If you want HD I hear the DVICO Fusion cards aren't bad.

3) No. Connect your cable or cable box to the PVR card using either a coax cable or composite with analog audio or s-video with analog audio. Connect your video card to your tv.

4) Best done if you have HDTV, it is difficult but not impossible to read text on a standard def tv.
