problem with acesing internet from xlobby

Postby dalanik on Mon Nov 22, 2004 3:01 pm

Hi there, I hope someone might be able to help... I'm having problems getting ANYTHING that requires internet access from XLobby to work...

First off, let me state that web browser works OK, both from IE and from XLobby. I use that PC for pop3 e-mail as well, and everything works fine too. I mean, I never had any problems with net on this PC.

So... weather plugins don't work; WebCams don't work... News don't work... Update doesn't work...

I turned off ZoneAlarm, and switched off internet connection firewall in my settings, and I get some traffic when I i.e. click on "find city" in weather plugin, but ultimately I get either "connection timeout" or Xlobby just crashes...

I get:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just in time (JIT) debugging, the config file for this
application or machine (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the machine
rather than being handled by this dialog.

I use WinXP pro SP1 with various auto-updates....

This is really weird, because EVERYTHING else works just OK, i.e. norton antivirus updates over internet, ping works, ICQ works, POP3 works, FTP works, even browser window from XLobby works, but no plugins or update...

Any ideas?

Can you use internet explorer without using XLobby?

I donĂ½ think it's the build -in XP firewall as this firewall only blocks incomming stuff.

Yes, sure, everything else works fine... it's only XLobby...

No, at home I don't. Plain and simple dialup. (I just need this in order to test the weather and news pages in xlobby)....

Turn on zonealarm and log all outgoing traffic.

Dalanik,

Did you ever figure out what was going on and why Xlobby couldn't access the internet. It seems that I'm experiencing the exact same problems. My computer has no problem accessing the internet, web browsers work, email works, updates work. Xlobby will download initial weather information when using Xweather or Xoapweather. It will even download initial webcam images. Then nothing more happens...no more weather updates or webcam updates. I've written numerous posts in different forum sections here but no one seems to know.

You may be my last ditch effort to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Oh, to let you know, I'm using Win2k, with Winroute as my firewall.

Thanks in advance for responding.

No, on that particular PC, i didn't. I made another 2 XLobby installations after that (on different PCs and with ADSL connection) and it works OK.

I was only having problems with 1 pc that I tried to connect through dialup.

First up, Thanks Steve for access to a great product!

My post doesn't require answering, I just thought that I would add my experiences in trying to install Xlobby and subsequently trying to access the internet. I'm no guru on these things and I'm hoping that documenting my approaches may assist someone down the track with solving an issue.

1. I installed Xlobby on my laptop whilst at work. Internet Access is via a Proxy server and I experienced no problems with getting the XML feed for the weather or downloading xlobby updates via the setup screen. Network access is via the built in network card. Hence, all is good.

2. When I took my laptop home, I could not get the XML feed to work nor dowload the xlobby updates via the setup screen. I had no problems accessing the internet with internet explorer nor any problems with using the browser in Baddabing's heavy metal skin. I then spent numerous hours reading various posts on this forum but nothing I changed may a difference.

3. At home I have a wireless network and ADSL modem and access the newtork via a PCMCIA network card in my laptop. I don't have a proxy server at home and access the internet by obviously changing the settings in IE. I thought that Xlobby may have picked up the proxy settings from IE when I installed it whilst at work so I deleted xlobby and reinstalled it when I was connected at home. This didn't make any difference. I also thought that xlobby may have been trying to use my built in network card as opposed to the PCMCIA card but I connected it up and this didn't change anything either.

4. My next approach was to look at the router and modem to see if any settings in them were a problem. (i.e. turned off fire wall, etc) This didn't make any difference but it was a good chance to download the latest drivers for each.

5. Next I loaded xlobby onto my home desktop computer and low and behold it works! Hence, there is nothing wrong with my home network, modem setup, or firewall. It appears to be a quirk of my laptop. That is my laptop will connect to the XML feed whilst I am at work (via a proxy server) but it won't work at home. Even though I can access the internet at home on my laptop without any problems.

I am at a loss to explain why this is. I don't need to use Xlobby on my laptop but for anyone else experiencing similar problems, I hope the above may spark thought into why this may be.

Cheers, CC&C.

P.S. Thanks to those who generously contribute to developing this product. If I choose to use this product further, I'll certainly be making a donation. Thanks again.
