Multizone amplifiers

Postby Alwayslearnin on Sun Jul 17, 2005 9:59 pm

Hi, I'm very new to Xlobby, but I keep reading about multizone audio capabilities, but what I don't see is how the speakers are powered from the different sound cards.

My current sound cards feed into powered speakers, but I'm not planning to run powered speakers in my walls for whole house audio.

What do you put between your sound cards and the speakers (and no I don't mean wire). :)

Thanks,
Keith

I have a stack of stereo amps next to the pc with the soundcards with long speaker runs to the speakers.

I'm not sure where you can buy these at anymore but Griffin Tech makes a product called the "powerwave". It is an external USB sound card that can power a set of speakers.

If you can't find the Griffin, try this: http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=206&product=10702

I use it and it works great.

jimmy

Does this acutally card power the speakers? Or do you have to run this cards output to a receiver and then into the speakers?

The Creative is not powered, so you'd still need an amp. The Griffin Powerwave is/was the only powered external that I know of.

I've got the Home Theater Direct 12 channel amp. Works and sounds great and the price is right. http://htd.com/muam.html

90c4, thanks for posting that amp. That's a great amp for that price point! Does it have IR On/Off control? Can you control the individual channel volumes by IR?

That does seem to solve several issues at a great price. The diagrams show the system connecting to wall volume controls, so I'm assuming if the volume controls have an IR ON/OFF function, that set of speakers can be controlled via the VC.

90c4, are you connecting to VCs or just running wire directly to the speakers, and if you are running directly to the speakers, how are you controlling volume?
