TO USB OR NOT TO USB

ok gang i have somewhere around 3 terebytes of storage, its divided up over two systems right now. 500 gigs on 1 comp, 250 gig on the other comp, these are internal drives. the remaining space is split up on 9 usb2 drives, pluged into the 250 gig system. i am out of space and plan on building a dedicared server, putting all my movies and music on it. i run 4 systes on the network, the only trouble i've had using the usb drives so far came from using cheap hubs. my queation is it safe/efficent to continue with the usb drives? i've found cases that can hold 26 dries but i fear thas A LOT of heat in a small area. which way do you think i should go ??

I also use large USB drives and was excited to see Hitachi's announcement for a 1 terabyte drive for $399. I expect that within 6 months there will many more on the market and prices will drop. I intend to consolidate my collection over time onto a few, very large usb drives once the price is right.
