Hierarchical views of folders in quick view?

Postby archerkit on Fri May 28, 2004 4:53 pm

Hi all, I'm using Jowaldo's skin, beta 2. My music is arranged like this example:
\mp3\Diana Krall
\mp3\Diana Krall - Live in Paris
\mp3\Diana Krall - The Girl in the Other Room

Etc. So each artist gets a folder, and within each of those are folders for the CDs pertaining to that artist.

But on the quick view screen, there are images for every single CD. Is it possible to make that so it respects the folder arrangement? So when I click on Diana Krall, it shows a new screen with all of the albums within that folder?

I imagine this might need a "highlight" feature, so I would choose the jpg associated on the top level.

This would make for less pages on the top level, a bit more navigable.

But I'd like to solve the real problem of miscellaneous folders - I also have a "soundtracks" folder, and I'd like to see those grouped together. But as of now, it's sorted alphabetically so it means Lord of the Rings is many pages before Star Wars, and I'd like them at least "near" each other.

Any thoughts or ideas would be great. Thanks!

I have a various, a various-soundtracks and a various-classical apart from the normal artist folders, mine sort so that they come under V then from with in that folder. All my tracks were ripped to ape using eac.

I recenetly ripped a couple of albulms that were badly scratched using DBpoweramp. The way it stores the tag info is different and a couple of the various albums now end up amongst the regular artists.

So what I'm trying to say is that its not an xlobby issue but a tagging one.

Hmm. Although that still doesn't resolve the fact that on the main page I have 7 Diana Krall icons. I would rather have 1, and upon clicking it would lead me into the rest of her albums.

I'm wondering if there's some sorting I can do on the database side of things, so that it sorts by folder. But I'm not sure there's a way to go "up" in xlobby.

the real problem of miscellaneous folders - I also have a "soundtracks" folder, .

I had this too. (a soundtracks folder) I had to edit my music database so the display line of these were sountrack / title. the artist for a soundtrack would be various, so its no real tradeoff to have the artist read "soundtrack". The sort order is also important. mine is artist:albumname:tracknumber:year:trackfilename

As far as sorting things by artists then albums, filter details does this somewhat. There is a big discussion about this in a metamask thread by cavity.

Yes, this is a big thing that needs to be fixed, it seems everyone is trying to figure it out, Art and Patrick have came the closest, but none have really achieved this. Like I've said, this is critical for people with their music organized Artist/Albums/tracks.

Im still pressing for some work to be done on this, Steve? There has to be something that can be done, as all the other htpc alternative frontends can do this, surely this can be implemented into xlobby.

cav, my music is organized artist/albums/tracks and I guess it never bothered me that all the albums come up in the music database because what would I use for a thumbnail on a artist folder anyway? seems like a wasted step to me. However, maybe I will look into this since you say "this is a big thing that needs to be fixed".

For me it's an issue for ease of navigation. When you have hundreds (and I'm sure have 4-figure numbers) of CDs, that's a LOT of screens to navigate through on the top level. When an artist has 15 albums, that's almost an entire page in quick view. (going on the 18 that are in jowaldo's skin at 800x600)

I think navigating by artist then album is a natural behavior. That's how you do it when going to a CD store - find the letter, then the artist, then you know that all the albums for that artist are contained within that little section.

I tried dragging an album as a sub-item of another album. This works to a point, meaning I can click on Rush and then Chronicles. I just can't get back "up" to the root.

Exactly, I couldnt have said it better. I figured this would be the most logical way to group music, and out of the 100's of folks I mingle with on htpc/tech sites, there are very few who don't organize like this.

Ditto Gents - this would be a wonderful way to reduce my covers on my PPC as well.

So should this thread be in the Feature Requests area, or has Steve already voiced some thoughts on the subject?

I can't stress how much this is needed.

I would be a full time xlobby user now, if it wasnt for my movies/tvshows/music modules being all shit out of order.

Dammit Steve! Jk....

Maybe someday I'll be able to get rid of Myhtpc, although its a great prog, its looks does nothing for me.
