Importing multi-disc DVD titles

Postby smeehrrr on Sun Jun 13, 2004 7:34 am

Is there any convenient way to import multi-disc DVD titles? I have my whole DVD Profiler database set up, but many of my titles consist of multiple discs that are ripped to different directories. So, for example, if I have Red Dwarf Season 3 (which is two discs), I have in my rips directory:

Red Dwarf Season 3 (Disc 1)
Red Dwarf Season 3 (Disc 2)

What I would love to have happen is to have my movies database end up with a container item called Red Dwarf Season 3 (with the appropriate cover art and description) and two sub-items under that called Disc 1 and Disc 2, also with the cover art and description.

I've been playing around with metamasks but I'm not even getting in the ballpark. Anyone have any suggestions? I know I can do this manually but we're talking about literally hundreds of discs here and the UI for managing hierarchy in a database is painful.

Even worse, after you manually change it, you lose the changes everytime you import a new title!!

Just to add to the pot here, how about the boxset information from DVD Profiler? It would be fantastic to see only the boxes in the main movie view, then select one to reveal the discs inside. This would halve the number of pages in my movie screen.

Has this issue ever been fixed? Importing DVDs from box sets is driving me crazy as the information is lost everytime I add another title.

I have set up the discs in subfolders which seems to do the job fine when the database is first imported but the structure seems to randomize each time the database is refreshed.

I love xlobby so far but this is the one issue that seems to be the most problematic.

I had the same problem with the ordering of the database. Make sure once they are in the order you want, anytime you sort them you need to do it twice. This will keep them in the proper order. I almost went insane trying to figure out why it kept "randomizing"

I already addressed the changes being lost issue in the bugs forum

I used to use DVDProfiler but it always seemed like I had similar (or other) problems.

So a few months ago I decided to switch my DVD database over to Ant, and use the xAnt plugin to import the database into Xlobby. It is much more customizable: for example, it seems (to me) easier to decide which datafields you want to import to Xlobby, and it seems to handle directory structures (to any depth) in a more intuitive manner.

Also, you can use Ant for any kind of collection, not just DVDs.

It was a little painful at first, but I'm glad I made the initial effort to switch over.

There is a helpful guide on the France Xlobby site which describes how to use xAnt (just Babelfish it if your French is not up to scratch, like mine! Actually as a side note, there are some excellent guides to other Xlobby features on the French site, which aren't available in English).

Anyway, just my 2 cents. Or pence.
