Windows Media Player instead of WinAmp

Postby Bushman on Wed Feb 22, 2006 5:57 pm

I know this topic has been touched on in a few other posts, but I haven't really found a solution...so I raise it again. I want to use WMP instead of FooBar or Winamp for audio.

I know there are many arguements why the other players are better, but if I can use WMP then I've got seemless integration with MCE. I wish to use a tablet PC running Xlobby Client to control a box with Windows Media Center as the sever (Xlobby server also running in the background).

All I need is a direction on how I could modify XLobby to control WMP as it's default audio player. Any help for an Xlobby newb? Has someone pulled this off?

You could always use ir and let xlobby control WPM with USB-UIRT (learn ir from MCE- remote)

I have a tablet running as a client. I want to select the song on the tablet and have that song play in WMP on the server. IR won't let me send specific song info.

I guess, in other words, I want it to work exactly how it works now, only use WMP as my audio player instead of Winamp.

Hope I'm making sense. Currently NetRemote and Rudeo do this...but I want xLobby to do it. I love xLobby...netRemote doesn't even come close. Why did you guys pick Winamp and Foobar? Why not WMP?

Could I use the Send Message command to send WMP a "play" command and somehow include the songs File path as perameters?

The reason we use winamp is because it is free. You can send messages easily, and more importantly Steven integrated its commands into XLobby. Maybe we want to shy away from the microsoft giant and not use their player. Or maybe we cant as easily pull info out of wmp as winamp does. The reason we use foobar is because it is free, and we can have lossliless audio formats etc.

I do remember using sendmessege commands for wmp classic some time ago. I dont know how it works or anything I just remember french team doing it for xmovewindow, or video or something.

So what would it take for someone (like Steven) to integrate WMP support into XLobby? Has someone written a plug-in already that you know of? Am I the only one with interest in this? Cause I've read a few other posts with similar requests.

I use Media Jukebox as my player of choice. I chose to this because of the "smart playlist" feature of MJ. It will generate a playlist of songs that is x hours long, contains songs from genre a, b, and c, and picks only songs that haven't been played in z days. It has a command line interface that I can pass database parameters to. The disadvantage of using a non-supported player is lose of information displays (coverart, elapsed time, next song, etc.) I use girder to display a simple now playing artist and title line on my skin.

So it is possible to use a player other than winamp of foobar if the program supports it, and you do some extra work to integrate it.
