Another multi monitor question

Postby gargoyle67 on Thu May 24, 2007 8:25 pm

Just bought a nice elo 17" touch screen and I've got k8ngm2 MOB with onboard video chipset (Nvidia) 1xDVI 1xVGA and on this I'm running 1x DVI projector, 1XVGA 42" plasma TV, and 1X VGA 9" touch screen TFT built into my Origen PC Case. I'm running the 2 VGA Screens Via a vga splitter which up until now has been fine but now I've unplugged the 9" screen from my case in favor of the new 17" Elo touch screen. The problem is I want to have the new 17" Elo go into standby after say a min or two of Inactivity and the plasma or projector to stay on, you see my problem now :? So... can I buy another nvidia card say with dual vga and run both internal MOB built in DVI and use the newly bought dual VGA card to run 17" Elo/42" plasma independently ?

Yes you can run two independent cards with Xlobby on the touchscreen and content on the projector/tv.

No, you CAN NOT get only one monitor to sleep/standby and have the other continue to run. Windows does not support this and none of the aftermarket screen-saver/multi-monitor products support it. I've spent years trying to do this - no-one has yet to come up with a product or software package that will do it.

Thanks Baddabing, Seems strange given the upsurge in HTPC that this has yet to be implemented, Seem a necessary function when using touch screens. Guess I could add a card and switch between projector and touch screen using the nvidia software, shutting down the touch screen in favour of the projector.
Ahh well you never know, some smart person may add this function in the future.

Nvidia Quadro

What about the Nvidia Quadro graphic cards you can run 2xvga or 2xDVI
devices on them, could I just switch bewtween them using the software.
I.E switch between touch screen and plasma and if there independant of each other wouldn't the touch screen shut down when no activity is detected ?

Regardless of the video card...

1) Plug touchscreen in to video out
2) Plug projector in to OTHER video out
3) Fire up the PC
4) Right click on desktop - select PROPERTIES
5) Select SETTINGS
6) If your video card drivers are installed correctly you should see TWO monitors. If you don't then contact your video card help desk.
7) If you DO see two monitors, Check the box that says EXPAND MY DESKTOP
8 ) click the IDENTIFY button. 1 & 2 will appear on the monitors. Make the touchscreen the default monitor
9) Set the resolution for each screen (typically 800x600 for touchscreen and then whatever you projector supports)
10) Start xlobby - goto xlobby setup - under misc tab select which monitor you want xlobby on
11) Configure your video player to play on the projector.

Re: Another multi monitor question

@Baddabing, I seem to remember that you said you have your HTPC setup with two video cards and that you use one for your touchscreen and the other I assume for your projector. I've just bought another video card also and I'm having major problems setting them up, I have Elo 17" touchscreen which I use for xlobby, Hitachi DVI projector which I use for playing movies as you said above spanned, but I also have a 42" plasma that I would like to add. The problem is that my desktop icons seem to move to one desktop or the other and not stay on my Elo Touchscreen, also I would like explorer to stay on both Elo & Plasma and sometimes the elo touch part gets thrown off by multi desktops ? So my question is: can I use 3 screens or is it just too big of a headache, the only way I seem to be able to get the Elo and plasma working together is to use a vga powerd splitter. Have you got more than 2 screens setup if so how did you go about it ?
Thanks in advance :D
