Event Manager and variables field

I know I am missing something simple here but how do I capture what is in the variables field there. The GetVariable function is to do something with a text box unless I'm missing another way to use it.

Any of you plugin writers know the answer to this? It's pretty important to my X10 plugin because I don't want to have separate commands for device 1, device 2, and so on. If I can use the variable field in the event manager I can have the user put a device number there and only have one command for send.
