Zoning and fat clients

Help each other out

Zoning and fat clients

Postby Marbles_00 on Sun Jul 02, 2006 2:46 pm

I hope someone can help.

I have a multizone setup that is working pretty good. I'm currently experimenting with connecting fat clients to the zoning server and having them act as zones too. Both client and server see each other. The server considers the fat client as a zone. I can set music up to the zone (fat client). Both client and server act as though the music is there, but nothing is playing from the fat client (yes Winamp is installed and running). The time (elapsed and total) of the client machine report 0:00.

The other question is how to view cover art on the client in this sort of setup? The databases on the server is seen but the cover art does not display on the client machine. Should the database be copied from the server to the client machine?

I also want to make aware that I'm not using xlobby2sd.exe as that as far as I know is for thin clients.

Thanks in advance.

your fat client should get every-databases from your server...

so, make sure to use UNC links in your server databases.

example:
use: \\Servername\D\mucic\artist\album\....

instead of: D:\mucic\artist\album\....

yep, you don't need xlobby2sd.exe for a fat client ;)

Thanks,

That's what I thought, but two problems seem to arise.

1) Everytime I restart the client, it seems to reset the database location back to C:/music for some reason. If I then set the location to the server, I seem to be loosing zone control of all the other zones from the client machine.

Hmm, weird.

you should not configure the "basic" section in the client, make sure is not. ( maybe delet the template music.xml from \databases\templates\ and the database too... just to be sure that is not the probleme)
make sure, there are unc path in your database music in your server. then start xlobby on your server, then start the client, the fat client should get the same database of your server and that should works...

later

Yeah, that's what was going on. I thought of that after my last post, checked it and that's what I'm doing. I remember seeing discussions on the UNC paths, but I figured those were done on the client machines.

Thanks for setting me straight. That seems to work, but now one solved problem has led to another. Now I'm crashing (white screen with red "X" when accessing zone page when particular zone being selected) when I try and set to one of my zones. Since it is only happening on one zone, I think that is something at my end that I'm going to have to look into.

Thanks again for your help.
