Two questions about categories and input buttons

Hi,

I have some questions regarding categories and input buttons. Maybe somebody knows the answers:

Is there a way to select the current item of an category from a plugin? For example selecting an Album from music or a Movie from movies.

Is there a way to set the value for the category>input from a plugin?
