Has anyone ever seen this, VGA over CAT5:

inspired from :

If it works it could save me alot of money.

Yep, it seems to work. A few weeks ago I tried using an cat5 UTP as an antenna cable to my TV (instead of a coax) The cable was about 20m long. To be honnest, the signal wasn't perfect and one channel was simply bad, but this was with an antenna signal. For a normal video signal I think the UTP would be worth trying.

I doubt its actually worth the save, unless u r planning some real long runs, and i dont think RGBHV runs that long, even in twisted pair :)

I will only be running it for standard VGA from my computer to the new 10" touchscreen. I won't be using it for HDTV or anything like that.

Plus I am a Network Tech. so I have access to CAT5 and CAT6 :D

Do you think it will be OK for just VGA???

My screen is set to be delivered tomorrow and I want to have everything setup.

Thanks,
Scott

Scott

I'm glad I ran into this thread. I have a lillipult 7" TS and I also built a cat5 VGA cable. IMO the lillipult 7" TS is nice for what I paid for it. It's a budget priced piece of hardware and gets the job done. I do have problems with it getting disconnected from the usb/video Y split cable every once in awhile and have to reconnect it. I would have purchased a bigger one if I had the money at the time. I'm glad to see you went with the 10". Most skins are tight.

As far as the cat5 VGA cable is concerned, the quality of the one I built is good but it does create a shadow effect on the TS. On a regular monitor it looks better. I guess the smaller TS makes the imperfections more noticable. I believe it comes down to your soldering skills. I'm Ok at soldering and that's probably why I get some ghosting when using my TS. The cable I built was about 17 feet.

Oh that explains, then it might very well be worth it. And i do believe it works pretty nice, but we will see once u have tested it :)

The shadows are probably from the fact that Cat5/6 is not shielded typically. Or the shielding is not intended for that use.

Sam,
That was what I was going to ask summerall.

summerall,

Did you use STP (Shielded) CAT5 or Unshielded. From reading it says you can use UTP but it may cause shadows. We have plenty of UTP CAT5 and 6 but the STP is a little harder to come by. I may still try it with UTP since the VGA connectors will cost all of $3.

I am also looking at how much it would be to run just regular VGA cable, my run is about 25ft. Oh, and I also need to extend the USB connection the same. MORE MONEY!!!! :D

Here's a place that has reasonably priced cables. They have a combo VGA/USB at the bottom of the page. But they max out at 15". You miught be able to get a custom length.

USB 2.0 has a limit of 16FT. I've tried extending it further and the device wasn't even recognized, like I hadn't even plugged it in. I don't know if they make some converter that will let you send it further.

I read this a while ago, not sure if you have seen the thread by roveer. Looks like btrcp2000 went through a good amount of effort to make it work.

Atleast here, on expensive small northern market, 10m (roughly 25ft) regular VGA cable costs about 12€ (40€ for higher quality one, with gulded plugs), so roughly in USD that would be $15 ($50 for hq one), plus im pretty sure u can score it somewhat cheaper in states, in my country prety much everything is shitty expensive. Also look where u buy, i once bought that same regular cable in hurry from computer store for 30€, so price range is pretty wide... but as u can see its not really that expensive so thats why i was questinalizing the savings u will achieve.

Would that even matter with the touchscreen, it would be just like a mouse right??? As far as I knew mice were not USB2 but please tell me if I am wrong.

I have 3 10ft. USB extention cables here in our shop that I hooked together and plugged a mouse into and it worked fine, no problems. So I would assume the USB portion should be fine since that was 30ft, right?

Thanks for the info Sharp_1, he went thru alot didn't he :D

Thanks Sam, those are some good prices. I did find:
25ft Premium VGA HD15 Male to Female Tri-Shield Extension Black Cable
for $36.18. That does not seem that bad to me, do you think that will work??

Thanks,
Scott
