Fat/lite Client? touch screen best setup

Help each other out

Jim,
The Airpanel 100 that I have has a fairly old CE os but the wifi is not builtin. You can put a pcmcia wifi card into it but it is not built in. Since it is an old CE it is difficult to get drivers for most pcmcia cards. The Airpanel 110 does have it built in. Do you have a link for what you are considering so I can compare it to mine ?

Thanks,
Tom

when faced with an CE 4.2 unit 8.5" screen and a windows 2000 unit with 10" screen which would get if price was the same and 802.11g wireless installed on both.

its to be used to remotely control xlobby server.

Hi Jim,
That is the type that I have.

Note :
'Optional network cards will connect to 802.11b/a LAN's, 2.5G/GPRS WANs or Bluetooth PANs'

No 802.11g and no built in wifi. Other software that will run on a normal PDA running CE will not work on it either as it has a special edition of CE just for this machine that is non-upgradeable. In fact I have yet to find anything that works for my HP PDA that would work with it. Essentially the software that comes with it is what you get. The connectivity that I have with mine with the special wifi 802.11b card you have to find (not made anymore, ebay mostly) really stinks. I actually ebayed a different brand wifi card thinking that it would work better.. no improvement.. Is also runs a special non-upgradable version of IE that is really old and does not support newer java or html instructions. I would say that 70%+ of the web site that I tried to surf with it would not work correctly because of this. It is like a product that was not totally developed. Orphaned child. The hype on your link makes it sound great but it is not. The real touchscreen resolution is only 800x600. External is higher. Speed is pathetic even plugged into its base with a broadband connection not even using the wifi.

Note : Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer

also review link

"Loading times are a bit slow, even with a broadband connection. Windows CE's version of IE offers no support for plug-ins or other extras, such as Java or Flash, that one takes for granted in a regular PC browser."

This problems can have a major effect when running Xlobby. Like I stated before my HP with a wifi card worked better with Xlobby. Bottom line. I think you will be disappointed and frustrated if you get this. I would strongly suggest going a different route.

Maybe I made a mistake . After doing a bit more looking I actually have a ViewPad 100

http://www.viewsonic.com/support/mobile ... iewpad100/

which looks a lot like a Airpanel 100

http://www.viewsonic.com/support/mobile ... /index.htm

Not sure what the difference is. Okay I just looked. Same machine and specs but newer CE operating system. That appears to be it. I see one on ebay at $54.00 at the moment. The link I had on the previous post indicating having to get a seperate wifi card is still correct for Airpanel 100 as well for the Viewpad 100. My points and opinions are valid for a Viewpad 100. It also looks like the points I made about the JAVA and limited IE support are still valid as well for the Airpanel 100. You will have to decide for yourself about the Airpanel 100 as I have no experience with it just the Viewpad 100. Seeing that is based on the same slow hardware I do not see it improving in the speed area. I suspect Viewsonic had a boatload of Viewpad 100's to get rid of so the just updated the operating system and re-labeled it. Maybe someone here has experience with a Airpanel 100.

check out WebDT products 8" screen with nice looking cradle "

http://www.dtresearch.com/prod_webDT366.html

they have a CE 5.0 and XP verson. They look great. I just got the CE 4.2 one off ebay $200.00 with a cradle and 802.11g card under $100.00 i have a remote under $300.00. the XP is about $1300 with wifi. I'll be getting that one at X-mas. also they have a wifi touchscreen no VGA or USB to run. It only needs a power supply and it uses 802.11g to link up with your computer. It cost $850 in a 15". Why you are on the site the have a wall mounted version also. Thanks to everyone for the help. The fun begins!!!!!! When I get it all working I'll post pic of it under my HTPC.
