Performance Issue

Postby str1der on Fri Oct 22, 2004 6:15 pm

I just finished installing xlobby and Jowaldo's skin to my jukebox PC. It's an Athlon running at 900mhz with 256MB of memory. The only thing I've set up is my music (700 full albums with cover scans). Performance is just terrible. The music plays ok but moving from one screen to another takes between 15 and 30 seconds. When I check system resources the cpu is fine at 30-40% but the PF usage is around 700 MB. Is there anything I can check that might be causing this slow down. The other jukebox software I use, Partytime jukebox, runs fine. Any ideas? Thanks.

yeah that sounds like its way too slow... granted thats not the fastest computer, but it shouldn't take that long.

Did you check to see what programs are eating up all that memory? That sounds way too high at 700mb. I have about 275 albums and xlobby take about 108mb is what I just found.

Anyone else here have close to 700 albums like str1der? How much memory does xlobby take up for you?

You could always try a fresh install of xlobby, update it with the latest exe http://www.xlobby.com/xlobby2.zip

and the last copy of my skin i posted
http://www.xlobby.com/files/jowaldo/jowaldo.zip

Doin that seems to fix a lot of peoples random problems like that.

Actually I just installed this last night with the latest versions of both xlobby and your skin. Also is there a recomendation on the size of the cover art or does xlobby automatically resize it?

Jowaldo did you see my other post in the skin forum regarding my problem with the weather module?

I just replied to that thread :)

What size is your coverart? That could be why its slow.

I'm not at home right now but I think they are like 200-300K. Most of the images I got by going to Amazon then clicking on the cover image and doing a save as. Now that i think about it I have to versions of the cover art in each folder because i had 2 different jukebox programs. One is a under 50k Jpeg the other is a BMP which is probably 200-300K. Both are called cover.jpg or bmp . Which would xlobby be using by default?

I'd make sure that they are all jpg for starters. I looked at my covers and they are all jpg and on average about 75-100k in size.

If you are using my skin, if you have a album cover highlighted, then click the music note button, there is an option to download cover art straight from inside xlobby.. works pretty well too. It downloads them from amazon/walmart/etc

I have 800 albums and Xlobby takes about 100-110Mb (checked in the process window)
If i check in the performance window the available memeory drops from around 220 Mb to 40 Mb

How big and what format are you cover art pictures in?

str1der: when you say your PF was around 700 do you have other stuff running at the same time taking up all that memory, or is it just xlobby doing that?

try removing the "bmp" coverart extention from the "music" database import template. And then delete your db and reimport.

I'm using Hevymetal skin
AMD XP2600
Win XP
512 Mb 333Mhz RAM
3 soundcards diferent makes

Responstime when changing music page: instantly <1sec (15 albums each page)
When i'm woking with another prog on the same comp. it takes about 5-15sek to get xlobby in focus again, after that it goes fine again.

I would agree with Jowaldo on the hardware. My experience:
-1296 CD's (16,000+ tracks)
-Sub second page refreshes with 12 covers per page
-AMD 2600, 1 gig ram. XP Pro
-CPU utilization is under 5%
-Perfmon shows Xlobby using 136 meg ram and 410 MB PageFile usage.
(also running AntiVirus, Firewall, UPS and Ghost in background)

If your not up for a motherboard upgrade then doubling the amount of RAM you have to 512 will definitely help your machine's performance on memory intensive applications.

And 40% CPU utilization with just Xlobby running doesn't sound right. Have you made sure your computer isn't spyware infested?
