Easily in V3, not so easy in Freelobby, but could be doable via plugin...I'm not aware of one though.

I'm not sure about V2, because I've been using only V3 since it became available.

So here in my ever changing world of my HTPC / whole house audio system i have yet another plan.

I am going to use a single (4 winamp instance) soundcard to act as 4 sources. These will then connect to a Request IMA amp with RS232 control. The four winamps will act as 4 distinct sources. The CD will be another source along with an mp3 / ipod dock, and an external tuner.

Then hopefully i willl use Xlobby to transmit 232 commands to the request amp.

So now i have 7 input sources and currently 5 defined audio zones.

I have all the 232 commands and the port settings so now i need to decide how to implement the 232 commands. Marbles had mentioned Girder, but first inspection is that seems to be time consuming to learn along with leaning everything else.

Essentially, the only commands i need to send are on and off and direct input sources to output zones, volume up, down and muting. I am going to need a lot of help it appears. Any advice or assistance in getting this up and running????

Comments on my current direction and suggestions are also welcomed.

I have finally pulled the trigger and got the Request IMA which is RS232 addressable and am now digging into how to control it via girder. The amp comes with a third party program to control it (also via serial) so i know the communication, cables etc are working but im pretty much at a standstill of how to implement girder. I have been on the girder forums and trying to get it going from there, but am getting limited assistance. I was hoping someone might be able to give me a little tutorial / newbie guide on how to implement girder and the lua scripting?

Check first if the third party prog u mention supports command line, if thats the case u can command it directly from freelobby without girder.

It is a simple exe file to communicate with the amp. It does not appear to have the ability to receive command line prompts.

Or you could possibly use the XMoveWindow plugin and integrate the third party software right into Xlobby. Not sure what you would do with a thin client, but it may work for a screen on the actual server.

How experienced are you with girder. The rs232 protocol seems pretty simple...there are not that many commands, but creating and implementing the lua seems to be overly complex. i have not been able to find a good starting point to adapt.

I prefer to stay away from the 3rd party app as it does not function exactly right and additionally the UI is awful. Some buttons cant be read, toggle highlights are all messed up etc...Girder seems fairly straightforward solution, but i cant seem to get off the ground with it.

What you should do is check the girder forums to see if there are examples of lua scripts to control the RS232 port. That's what I did to do up my parallel port control scripts.

It could be as simple as:

PORTIO_WriteBYTE(760,128)

Where: 760 is the Decimal number of COM2. Convert to hexidecimal you'd get 2F8.
128 is the data, which would be different for your usage.

I've been doing multisource, multizone for for several years. Initially, I was using some 20W USB soundcard amps and multiple instances of WinAmp, but had problems keeping the instances of winamp and the USB soundcard amps properly linked. Then the soundcard amps would fail. Now they don't make them anymore.
3 years ago I migrated to a matrix audiovideo amp (http://www.shinybowusa.com/shop/product ... ucts_id=47 [I believe the same company that makes the one used by Calrad]) and this multichannel amp http://www.htd.com/amplifiers/DMA-1240#. I control the av switch by IR (USBUIRT).

You will have to rename the zones if you choose to use this.

BTW, the above setup works flawlessly. I only wish the amp could powered on by USB. With this setup you have full control of each zone, either with a central zone controller, or via the zone room itself. I think this works better than using HTD's zone controller. For zone control, you can buy any number of old windows mobile PDAs from amazon.com (used or refurbished Dell Axims or HP Ipaqs) from $49 and up.
I'll try to upload my skin (which was very user friendly) later.
