Help with Ripped movies

Postby glamdring on Thu Sep 16, 2004 1:17 pm

I love this program, but I have one thing I have not found a solution for. I have ripped DVD's with DVD decoder to both an ISO and File mode. The ISO's work, but the ones done in file mode do not play with zoomplayer. The folder structure looks like this.

E:\movies\Movie\VIDEO_TS

Within the folder is a 2 IFO files, one called video_ts.ifo and the other one is named similar to the vob files in the folder. Zoomplayer sometimes playes the warnings and studio logos then exits back to XL. Other times it does nothing. I'm using the command line switches that are default in the latest version /f %playlist%. Can anyone give me an idea what is wrong?

You have to play those in DVD mode in zoomplayer not file mode

Zoomplayer is in DVD mode, at least it says it is, do I need to change my switches?

Did you mean to say DVD Decrypter? If so, did you "Select All" when you did the rip in File Mode?

Good catch, Yes I meant DVD decrypter. But no I used select main movie files + IFO's. I thought that would reduce the size of the rip compared to an iso. Is that my problem?

Yep, that's your problem. When you use DVD Decrypter in File Mode you must "Select All", otherwise you run into problems with playback like you're experiencing. If you want to reduce the file sizes (ie, strip out extras & menus), check out DVD Shrink. I use DVD Decrypter to rip the movie in File Mode, ripping all of the files & then use DVD Shrink to strip out all of the extras & menus, leaving just the movie (no FBI warnings either :D ). It's a little tedious to do it that way - you can use Shrink to do the whole process, ripping & encoding, but I've had really good success using the combination of the 2. Here are the links:

Hope that helps.

1) Use DVD Decrypter to rip ALL the movie files from the DVD to a directory

2) Then use DVD Shrink to extract just the movie from that directory. DVD Shrink allows you to compress the movie to make it even smaller, but the use of compression is optional.

I have never had a rip fail using this method.

I have used DVDShrink to reauthor all my dvd's and have not had a bad rip so far. You might want to start with DVDShrink just for testing purposes and after that, you can use the DVD Decrypter/Shrink combo if you want. :)

I also use DVD Decrypter to rip the movie and DVD Shrink to get rid of all the excess stuff. This is an awesome combination. Once you've set the defaults in DVD Decrypter to select all, you're set....and you'll only have to do that once - it'll remember the setting after that.

...and for re-authoring I haven't found anything that's easier to use than DVDShrink. I used to use IFOEdit, but after trying out DVDShrink I couldn't go back. :D

Just as an aside : The name DVDShrink is a little confusing. Yes, this app does give you the ability to compress the files so they can be written to a DVD, but it can do Soooo much more! You can turn the compression OFF to retain the quality and still use all the great re-authoring tools this app has to offer. That's what I, and many others, use it for......and no, I DON'T work for them. :)

I actually just went through the process of ripping a LOT of DVDs using DVD Shrink. Worked like a charm, or so I thought.

Just went to test out some with my new xnet skin (in progress) and same problem. I get a little flash from zoomplayer but nothing plays, I don't understand...I know this worked previously.

If I do an open directory it plays fine, but xlobby tries to launch the VIDEO_TS.IFO and that doesn't seem to work. It does work just fine with WinDVD.

I use DVD Skrink for pretty much all my rips now and have no problems with opening them in Theater Tek.

Over at AVSForum, I read that DVDShrink, during the rip phase, is more insensitive to dirt/scratches etc than DVD Decrypter. In other words, it'll tell you the rip went fine, but you may have problems during playback. A poster there had exactly that problem. He then tried DVD Decrypter and, although it took longer to rip, it played OK.

Finally he thoroughly cleaned the disc and tried DVDShrink again and it worked OK.

In the end both are fine products, but unless you're committed to only use 1 product, I'd use both for the individual strengths each of them bring.

I would agree that dirt/scratches might be a cause, but I ripped 150+ DVDs and have not gotten 1 to work yet with ZP. Hopefully blight over at ZP will have an answer for me. I'll pass on anything I get to work

Chad,
Were you able to get them to play in ZP outside of Xlobby? I've got to believe that this is something to do with ZP & not the rips if you can get them to play with WinDVD.

Chad, just curious...in Output Files, under Preferences in DVDShrink, did you enable the following: Split VOB files into 1 GB and Logical Remapping of Streams?

I probably have the same setup as yours - I'm using DVDShrink to rip my dvds and use Zoomplayer with the WinDVD decoder to play the ripped movies. I don't have a problem at all with both playing the ripped movies using Zoomplayer itself, WinDVD or Zoom in Xlobby. I had problems way, way back when I was experimenting on different preference settings in Shrink but once I got the right settings, everything went smooth.

The versions I'm using are:
DVDShrink 3.1.5
ZoomPlayer 4.00
