Winamp does not respond to Xlobby

Postby JSL on Sat May 27, 2006 5:01 pm

I am about going crazy with the following problem:

I am trying to set up a second computer with xlobby (eventually to make a fat client).

However I am stocked with a very banal problem: I can't get Winamp to be controlled by xlobby.

Winamp loads when xlobby loads, but it does not respond to xlobby's playlist, music controls etc. (when selecting a song xlobby just show 00.00/00.00). When I close Xlobby, Winamp does not close either.

What have I done:
* I have the path right in the General tab
* I have reinstalled Winamp several times
* I am using latest version of xlobby and wiamp 5.2 (also tried 5.05) (I am using these versions on two other computers and have never faced problems here)
* I have .net 2.0 installed (and also tried to run "repair")
* I use Windows XP SP 2
* I am using the defalut skin
* I have not yet attempted to connect to other computers (via xnet) - I still only try to setup as a stand alone.

I do not know where to look next and desperately need some help on the further diagnose (which files/settings, etc.) :D

I am totally blank!

No one has an idea of what to do or where to look?

only thing i can think of is to check that no strange services or programs may be running in the background that could be interferring..

I had the same problem once - turned out to be 'evil lyrics' plugin.
Do you run any winamp plugins?

Hey, Thanks for the replies!

I have now cleaned up various services (/processes) running, closing the ones that did not seem familiar to me (many). It had not helped, but I will try some more "cleaning" later.

I have installed a new/clean Winamp version, so I guess I only have the standard plugins installed (?). At least, I checked and I do not have the particularly 'evil lyrics' on my computer.

It seemed that I have (partly) solved the problem, though!

I tried to install Winamp in the xlobby directory, which actually solved the connection to Xlobby problem!!! Very encouraging!

However, I would prefer for the long run to have the Winamp installations in a separate directory and still have xlobby recognize it - especially when I add more zones later. (I know I am demanding!)

So, how come Winamp only works when it is installed the Xlobby directory???

It came to my mind that my Windows XP is installed on top of a Windows 2000. Could this be causing the problem?

Thanks again for any replay!

it could be some config file for winamp (i don't know how/where winamp saves those things)

Basically though if you do a separate install anywhere outside the typical program files/winamp folder you prob should be ok...

Hey jowaldo,

Thanks for the reply.

I have gone the long way! Formatted the harddisk and started all over!

After hours of reinstallations of windows, codecs, various players, girder, network drivers, anti virus programs, .net 2.0 etc. etc. I have now a configuration that works, i.e. Winamp and Xlobby communicates! :D :D

I have noticed however, that the control of Winamp (v 5.22) (sometimes) still fails if I have closed down Winamp while it points on a file on the network. I am not sure if the fault is consistent.

off topic, but can i sugest you get a copy of ghost (or somthing like it) and take a snapshot of your system, while its working..

that way , the next time it goes flakey you can simply "roll back" to a version taht works.

i do it and it saves a load of time :)

fo example, last weekend i had some makes coming round and everything went pear shaped, did a quick re-install (about 5 mins) and all was well :)
