Removing startup app

Postby rembetis on Mon Aug 15, 2005 12:57 pm

I'm very embarassed to be asking such a rudimentary question, but I can't seem to find the answer myself...

I've been running myHTPC for a while now, and somewhere along the line I set up XP to boot it on startup. I'd like to switch to booting into Xlobby now but I can't seem to find where the boot config lies. No "myHTPC" shortcut is present in my Startup folder (in fact, the only thing there is a "boot.ini" file) nor is it listed under the Startup tab when running msconfig. Is it possible my startup folder is corrupt somehow? Are there other ways of setting startup programs that I am missing?

Thanks in advance...

Have you tried to find it in the registry. I'm not an XP user but for Win2k goto start/run... type in regedit. Look under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ your will find Run, RunOnce, RunOnceEx. Look in any one of those and find the key for MyHTPC then delete it. Most times that's all that is required, but XP may be different.

Just remember that before you do anything with the registry, make a backup of it.

The other thing you could do is look into the boot.ini file and see if it resides there. Look on the internet for help on modifying the boot.ini file for WinXP. I just did this for a Win2k machine that was trying to dual boot with Win98 (even though it didn't exist) so I know there is some good information out there.

Hope this was helpful.

Thanks for the help, Marbles. The registry is where I went next, and still couldn't find anything, but I happened upon a great little freeware utility called Autoruns and it located a registry entry for myHTPC in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\Run. So I just unchecked it and now all is well. No idea how I got it there in the first place, but oh wel...

or you can run gpedit.msc then select user configuration>administrative templates>system. and configure xlobby2.exe under custom user interface.

i have never tried it with xlobby but it did work with myHTPC

edit: ops.. didn't read the question

Intesting how the the locations are different from Win2k to WinXP for certain registry entries.

Most likely, though I've never used MyHTPC, there was an option to start the program when XP starts, and it never cleared when you un-installed/deleted the program.

Anyways, welcome to the world of Xlobby. I tried Meedio, but find Xlobby a hell of a lot more simple to use.
