Multiple clients - 1 PC - 2 Screens

Postby defrag on Mon Jan 30, 2006 6:27 pm

Hi all, got a bit of an issue....

Here's the problem, I have a case (Silverstone LC18) with a 7" LCD touchscreen and I'm also connected to a 32" LCD via DVI. I have 1 graphics card (NVidia 6800) which connects to both screens.

Currently I start up with XL running on the 7" screen to use as a jukebox, weather etc, but for viewing movies, pictures, games I want an XL screen on the main screen. Obviously when I startup another XL the first closes and then I have to switch instances when I want to go back to just using the touchscreen, which is a real pain.

I've tried running a server/client on 1 machine and although this works, you can't set the client to run on a different screen - or can you? This would be awesome!!!! I'm having to have 2 XL directories (although the databases are only pointing to 1 instance)

Another solution would be running 2 thin clients on the same machine but there is still the issue of being able to specify which screen they point to.

Just to add that the 7" runs at 800x600 and the 32" at 1360x768, so mirroring (ultramon) is a pain and runs too slowly. Fat and thin client at different res on the same machine seems to be the answer.

Any thoughts, suggestions?????

Probably the best solution for you would be to have only one instance of XL, running on your touchscreen. When you launch a movie the zoomplayer opens on the big screen. That is quite simple to do, just move zoomplayer to the second screen and close it. Next time it's launched it will be on the big screen. Hope that's what you meant.

Thanks for the reply.

I've managed to get that working fine - but the real issue here is that the touchscren is only to be used for jukebox and weather use (and when I get the time create a modified version of the skin with only those buttons). On the main screen I want to control XL using a remote and do eveything.

One thing I haven't tried is seeing if the nvidia software will allow me to get the thin client running on the touchscreen while leaving the server part running on the main screen. The client has to mirror the server which is obviously not a problem.

The fact that you can get 2 XLobbys running on one pc must imply that you can have them on different screens - preferably with different skins, resolutions. It would be nice if when setting up the server text file you could add which monitor in same way you do with the fat XL

On the 'Misc' tab, there is a monitor setting. If you put 0 for one instance of XL and 1 for the other, you should be able to open each XL on a different monitor. I haven't tried it, bit it should work.

That works fine for a single instance - but if you are running a thin client on the same machine as the server then running settings on the client affects the server!!!!

Have a look at Colby's post: http://www.xlobby.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=25439. You are both discussing the same thing.
