WOL by PPC? Is it possible...how?

Postby Marbles_00 on Fri Oct 20, 2006 1:11 pm

Okay, I've finally got a PPC running Windows Mobile 2003 Premium (Dell X3i - and love it). I've set up .NET Compact Framework 2.0, and I've been able to connect fine to my server via thin client, everything in that aspect is working great.

Outside of Xlobby now, I want to be able to wake the server via the PPC. I've tried Depicus WOL for PocketPC, but get an error as indicated below:

Code: Select all
Could not find resource assembly

So I guess I'm calling all ppc users. What are you using to wake your computer via ppc...if you are even doing it at all?

Thanks in advance.

Great. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who has had problems with Depicus. To bad though, I have used his other WOL software and it has always worked wonders.

Thanks for the link, R32, I will have to try it out when I get home.

Works great. Many thanks.

Question, what is good for putting a computer into standby via the ppc?

Create an event and assign it to a button on one of your PPC screens. Have the event execute a simple batch file with the following single line:

rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0

If you want to suspend your computer without Xlobby running that might be a bit more difficult. You might look at the PSTools from: http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/PsShutdown.html

You would also need something like PocketDOS on your PPC. This application emulates DOS on your PPC although I've never tried running any of the PSTools in this fashion but it might be worth a look.

Hope this helps!

Here's a free alternative to PocketDOS

Thanks for all the tips R32. I forgot I had a small app called sleep.exe. I copied that to my music server. Then created an event to pause all my music zones, exit the client, then place the server to sleep. It works great.

I will have to look at pDOSbox because it would be nice to have a .bat file or something to wake the server, then start the ppc thin client (making things as easy as possible for the wife to handle  ).

Thanks again.

Found two other WOL PPC programs that both work nicely.

WakeItUp - at the bottom of the page are .CAB downloads.

Wake On Lan 1.1

VXUtil worked great, but has so much extra that for the purpose of waking the server, just was not pratical for me. Using one of the above gives a slightly higher WAF, which is very important for me, since she is not technically inclined.
