Newbie - Can't add Winamp.exe to Foobar\Winamp Zones

Postby bashkan on Fri Dec 09, 2005 7:54 am

Hi,
I've been using myHTPC for over 2 years now and I decided to switch to Xlobby because it's better in many ways (and myHTPC is dead).
When I try to add winamp.exe to Foobar\Winamp Zones the Add button refuses to function. Everything else is fine but when I click the Open button or double click the exe it's not placed where it should be. I uninstalled winamp (It was 5.09) and installed 5.07 but the result is same. I searched the forums but no one seemed to have the same problem.
Any ideas?

Would it be a solution if I edit xlobby.xml manually and add the path of winamp.exe between <audioplayers></audioplayers> tags?
Or should I install .Net 2.0 ? I have 1.1 installed.

You could try what you suggested, as its possible the xlobby.xml got corrupted (has happened to me before). Is Xlobby and Winamp on the same machine? Xlobby runs on .Net 1.1, not 2.0, so that isn't the problem. If your edit doesn't work, delete that file entirely, reload Xlobby and try again.

hi rembetis;
Yes winamp and xlobby are on the same machine.
The weird thing is: When I browse to the executable of winamp and select winamp.exe, nothing happens. The path is not added to the zones list. While reading the forums I saw people talking about file extensions and associated programs. Do I have to make such a config before 'trying to' ad path of winamp.exe.
Tried editing the xml file but no result. Another interesting is: On the Trailers Path, I can select a folder and it is displayed where it should be. But when I close and reopen Xlobby the path disappears.
Well, was that a mistake to give up myHTPC? I hope not.

Absolutely not. I'm a convert myself, and am infinitely more happy with Xlobby. It's more complicated to setup, but that also means it's more powerful and flexible. Your problem is not a common one, and as such will probably have a unique answer (perhaps specific to your machine). You should not take this one hurdle as indicative of what your experience with Xlobby will be like.

Couple more things to try.

1. Make sure you have the correct files installed. Delete your first Xlobby install entirely. Download http://www.xlobby.com/xlobby2prerelease1.zip and then copy over any newer files from http://www.xlobby.com/xlobby2.zip.
2. It was initially reported that Xlobby didn't work with Winamp 5. Then some said only 5.09 or earlier worked. Just to rule out Winamp 5 as the problem, download Winamp 2 (I've moved to Foobar, but when I did use Winamp, I used 2.80 as it was the least resource intensive). Then try to add that Winamp.
3. This is a long shot, but is your Windows set to display extensions? Perhaps Xlobby gets confused if .exe isn't present.

I'll keep thinking, and hopefully one of the experts will chime in, but that's all I have at the moment...

rembetis:
Thanks for the encouraging words. Of course I will try to solve this out. The thing is, I am not a newbie in HTPCes, I've even written a program for organizing MAME rom files for myHTPC. And normally I never complain about how things go wrong at the first instance. First I try a lot of things, read the forums entirely (I mean it! I've read the entire forum) and then ask for help.
Anyway I will stick with Xlobby and try what you have suggested. Start all from the beginning :D
And you are a great help brother, thank you.
I'll post the results.

OK I give up!
I deleted everything I've downloaded about Xlobby, redownloaded xlobby2prerelease1.zip and xlobby2.zip. Extracted the former to C:\Xlobby, and the latter to the same directory overwriting files. I uninstalled Winamp 5.07 and installed 2.79.
Still : I start Xlobby, hit F2 and bring up Setup menu. I click general and Add button in Foobar\Winamp Zones. I browse to winamp.exe (C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe) click on Open but nothing happens. Xlobby refuses to add winamp's path to Foobar\Winamp Zones.

No... Don't give up! :(

Is Winamp already running (in the taskbar) when you try to add it, by any chance?

No winamp is not running :(
But I tried both combinations. I tried to add it both when winamp is running and when it's not.
I checked Add remove programs and saw that I have KB886903 hot fix installed for .Net framework (we have Windows Update services in our environment). I wonder if Xlobby does not like it.
I can add everything else like my music folder, pictures folder etc. But the Add button for winamp.exe still is nut functioning.
By the way my system is Windows XP Pro with SP2, .Net 1.1, Office 2003, Norton AV.

Not exactly, don't add it like this:
<audioplayers> C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe</audioplayers>

Try this:
<audioplayers>
<audioplayer volume="255">C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe</audioplayer>
</audioplayers>

Art;
I dıd waht you suggested (added the lines into xlobby.xml). Now when I start Xlobby winamp also starts. And the path of the exe is listed in Foobar\winamp zones. But there is no music playing. Could you please tell me; when you listen to music in xlobby, if you hit windows key and bring up winamp, is the playlist filled with the songs you selected within Xlobby? In my case winamp's playlist seems empty.

I am using the default skin that came with Xlobby.
I don't think it's a skin problem though. Because my problem is with the setup screen you bring up by hitting F2.
To remind; The add button in Foobar\Winamp Zones does not function. Meanwhile I tried the whole setup on another pc and the result is the same.
Could you please tell me the version of your xlobby2.exe and xupdate.exe files? I wanna compare those since there is not much left for me to do :(
Versions of files on my computer are;
xlobby2.exe: 1.0.2119.1889
xupdate.exe: 1.0.1732.22684

I didn't think it was a skin issue either, but just in case I wanted to make sure ...
My ver. are exactly the same:
xlobby2.exe - 1.0.2119.1889
xupdate.exe - 1.0.1732.22684
I'm not really sure what could be wrong with your setup, but what I would try is to uninstall .net reboot and install it again. Also my winamp ver 5.05, so don't think it's winamp....

What OS are you running ?
It looks to me like an access control problem?
Try to log on as administrator and take ownership of the xlobby and winamp folders and make them full controlled for administrator.
After that try to setup normally as you already tried.....
I have never seen a problem like yours till now.
Does winamp start and play songs on it's own ?
Any 5.x version below 5.1 works without any problem.
I have started with beta versions of Winamp 5 and then until 5.1 everything worked OK.
The latest know version to work with Xlobby is Winamp 5.09
