Clients, Servers and all that stuff...

Postby Grooby on Tue Mar 09, 2010 10:13 am

Hi, looking at the HP Slate as a way of being a super remote control running xlobby as client over wifi. I know nothing about this side of things so here are the numpty questions :?

I have a unraid server hooked up to my main HTPC running xlobby which feeds projector.

I asume i set xlobby on HTPC as server in F2, then have a version of xlobby running on its own licence on the HP Slate ticked as client in F2?
Does this then allow the Slate to control the HTPC to play films to the projector?
Is xlobby on the HTPC able to start/run minimised in the tool bar?

Thanks
Andy

There are several (or more) ways of doing this and I wont try to example them all. I am sure others will post their methods. I have tried to use the XL built in webserver browser (works ok), the windoes mobile client (requires re-worked screens for small screen size), and always seem to settle back to just use a remote control product on the fat client.

Since the Slate looks to be a Win7 full o/s, and you have WiFi, why not just use a remote control client on the Slate so you can control the server directly? It is fast and simple.

i will give you a quick summary of my setup.

i have one xlobby server, connected to a video matrix that sends audio and video to every tv in the house.
i have 3 touchscreens connected to that server, all displaying the same image, each screen goes to a different room.

i have one XL client running on a samsung q1 mobile, from the q1, i can control everything from any room. the client is in MIMIC mode !!!!!
you just have to set some commands to run 'on the server'. when in mimic mode, what you do on the client gets mimic'd on the server.

this way when you switch the video matrix to send video to projector, it does it on the server, not the client.
you will need another XL license, and you run that on your tablet pc to run XL.
the response is instant, and i have had no issues.
i would love to use an ipad, but damn thing won't run windows apps. YET.

All i want/need is xlobby running on Slate to control playback of music/movies on main HTPC feeding projector/sound system.

I am not familiar with Slate, but there are 2 ways to do this, regardless:

Free way: there is a webserver built into XL that you can use now in a browser to control the server.
Pay way: using a client on another machine to control the server.

unless someone else has a better way?

Why not use VNC or one of the other freeware remote control tools on the Slate?

Could work, but probably without audio feedback.

I wonder if flipping the webserver to use HTML5 will make it more usable as a remote solution for lightweight tablets like android or the ipad.

that looks good, but i want to stay away from resistive touch screens.
my next one is going to be Capacitive touchscreen

this way i can use a feather touch, instead of pressing with a bit of force.
