freaking AVS-forums

I always concluded that AVS was either extremely un-biased...or held the attitude of "why bother buying into either format...as the future of the whole platform is flawed".

I don't think it is really a good thing for the following reason:
HD-DVD player = $169 tops (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/subcla ... atid=25324)
Blu-Ray player = $399.99 (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/prodde ... 581&catid=)
And that's on SALE

Most likely the real winners so far are the dudes that have bought into a dual format player, or the chaps like myself, who have bought into neither format. Now, I won't be looking at that whole HD format for a while until those prices drop...and since we are talking Sony, and the whole greedy movie industry...they will probably shoot themselves in the foot...raise the price of the players and movies (or in the very least...keep them at their current costs)...as now Blu-ray has no competition, and piss off the end consumer.

Remember, since Sony owns the rights to Blu-Ray, anything produced has to be first approved by them to be allowed on the Blu format...my point being is how is the porn industry going to handle this? As Sony typically does not like to be tainted with that sort of market.

In the end, I think the consumer ultimately looses...at least in the short run.

*EDIT*
Here's a little article that talks about Sony vs. porn:

P3rv...now that you appear to be a Blu dude...what are you going to do?

hmm i bet u didnt learn this next direct quote taken from "pimplefaced xbox player's guide for wartime fud spinning" from that forum. ;)

Im like hitted in the head with a club! I cant believe that u of all people have let yourself been fudded, i thought that marbles is the one most likely to check his data from several sources and calmly analyze tech specs and draw his own conclusions from there.

On purely technical side i couldnt back then nor can i now find one single advantage HDDUD has over blu-ray. Hell why would i buy "good enough" when i can buy better (not by far, but small advantages on every single aspect add up considerably better product) with much wider studio support.

oh yes then there is the price issue:

I don't think it is really a good thing for the following reason:
HD-DVD player = $169 tops (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/subcla ... atid=25324)
Blu-Ray player = $399.99 (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/prodde ... 581&catid=)

Well u have to understand, im huge film freak, 2 years back when i was still buying DVDs i bought one movie avarage on a day, now im at somewhere around 1.7 (blu-ray) movies in a week. So player prices are rather indifferent (earlier i can move in to HDM, more i save), what counts for me is the media prices, which in reality (despite of all the fud) were equal. Prices are gonna get down in near future, regardless of format, its the case in every new technology, so current pricing is totally invalid point for making the choige. Infact i remember when i started with DVD, prices were higher, i guess its thanx to this state of war.

Most likely the real winners so far are the dudes that have bought into a dual format player,

This one u will need to elaborate, cause i hate to admit but im totally missing why?

Actually I was reading more, and it isn't that Sony is totally preventing the porn industry to press Blu-Ray discs period...they are just preventing them from pressing discs in a Sony own/run facility. According to the multiple articles I have read is that the porn industry are not getting alot of help period when asking questions about Blu-Ray. They were more accepted by the HD-DVD group.

I say this as of right at this moment from my neck of the woods:
LG Combo player - $233.99 (http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.ph ... cid=CR.405)
This way you can enjoy all the multiple movie titles on the market right now, and since HD-DVD will be selling off, and most likely the movies will be had at very low costs for the next few months as they try and get rid of inventory.

A basic Blu-Ray internal player:
Liteon - $197.99 (http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.ph ... cid=CR.405)

Not sure as to what profile specification of either player is at. All I'm saying is as of right now the best spot to be in is either a combo drive owner so you can get your paws on some pretty good deals, or someone like myself who is now waiting for the costs to drop.

Oh and:
i buy "good enough" when i can buy better (not by far, but small advantages on every single aspect add up considerably better product)

Hey if those small advantages (mainly the only real advantage is the larger capacity for data storage) are the things that you justify for the huge price difference between the two, then hey, who am I to argue. If your going to tell me that this one produces better PQ or audio then the other, then I would say, put all the test equipment aside, and everyone biased comments towards one way or the other aside, and do a side-by side comparison with just your eyes and ears. If you can really honestly say that Blu-Ray is better (or it may come out that HD-DVD is better...don't know, and quite frankly at this point, don't care), again who am I to argue. The only other thing that I can add, is that I can't buy into something where a final specification hasn't even been decided upon at this time...see my last line.

In the end, let's face it, the consumer doesn't win. We just get soaked and raped, while the corporations screw us every which way...just because they think they can.

Oh dont get me wrong though... deciding factor for me ofcourse was the studio support, when blurays list was double as long as HD-DVDs there was no doubt in my mind about longevity of formats. But it doesnt hurth though if your chosen format also turns out to be technically superior in every measurable way possible. When u add PS3 to the mix, as affordable entry point, which also plays games and serves backup media center when your lobbys harddrive brokes down... and not to mention outperforms standalone players because of updatetability... there was really no choige left for me... except how many hours early i go to wait infront of the shop on launch day to ensure i get one!!

Yeah people usually mention higher capacity as the key advantage, but i consider higher datarate way more important. That quarantees that higher capacity can be used as advantage on those few critical moments when going gets tough and codec starts to spew artifacts without enough numbers to crunch. Try to do that with HDDVD simultaneously with lossles audio... it doesnt help to hit the pedal when all reserve throttle is already in use :)

99 euro's...wow that's about $150 cdn. Pretty expensive for a dead product (hd-dvd wise). Around here in Canada, you can get one from futureshop for around $50. State's side is even cheaper. Sometimes you guys in Europe get the big shaft...pay more for gas, dead technology overly expensive, sub-par hockey teams  ...man, I'd bitch if I were you.

Well i thought that "grandma trap" was so hilarious i just had to photo it...

but guys im so frustrated... now i dont know what to buy for my friend's bd... thats why i went to shopping, wanted to get PSP, but those idiot salepersons havent get into their system that PSP-3000 is announced and were expecting me to pay full price for soon-2-b-obsolite model. I cant to be arsed to do that, like it wouldnt be bad enough to give older model to your friend, but theres no way to delay bd beyond launch date, is there?

And now i have no clue what to buy... PSP would have been perfect. U know "kid"-console to balance out all the gold watches and what not which make u feel so damn old...

Well cant win every fight had to swallow it and pay the full prize for the soon-to-be-legacy product... after all i got nice suprise for me mate which is the main thing.

But real reason for posting is that i just read over blu-ray.com that Sony has mentioned over CEDIA that they come out with 400-disc player next year!!!!!! WOOT!!!! I cant wait to import this beast, good thing is that this time around i dont even have to have it modded cause most of my discs (like 80%) are from states anyway (thanx for ½ price and cheap buck) and majority of my euro/aussie discs are prolly without region code. I just hope my old warhorse holds still this new steed gallops in :P

Would be totally awesome if they would embed playstation functionality into this killer player. I been already eyeing my old 777-changer and ps3 planning to merge them into bear's treasure chest contraption, but unfortunately that is way beyond my humble modding skills, id believe though thatkinda mod would be in realm of possibility...
