no sound from AVI files in pre-release player (fine in WMP,

I've been playing around lately with putting some of my TV episodes into AVI format for space reasons. WMP and TT play these fine, video and audio, but the internal media player won't output any sound from them. This is the first time I've tried it and just plain no luck. Any hints?
