Please help a newbie - problem setting up "thin client&

Postby newstuart on Wed May 24, 2006 7:51 am

Hello everyone,

Im new to this forum and have just decided to move away from MCE 2005 to Xlobby as it appears to be a more flexible option and hopefully better suited for my needs.

One of the main reasons I did this is because I wanted to use a Simpad (handheld windows CE PC) as a remote control "client" for my system.

I have read the tutorial on here about how to do this but do not seem to be having much joy, The problems Im having are,

1) I can not tell if I have managed to install ".NET Compact", I download it to my desktop pc and then run the program. The Active sync opens up and appears to load it to the Simpad however I can not find any record of it on the simpad after (ie in the program list or anywhere else)

2) This problem I feel may be caused by not having ".NET Compact" installed correctly - I copy the "xlobby2sd.exe" & the "servers.txt" (ammeding the varables to suit my IP address) to the simpad and try to run them but get a message saying the programs are not compattable with the machine.

Any help much appreciated :D

Hello newstuart,

This isn't going to help you now, but I am working on / looking for exactly the same thing. I have too many projects in the works so it will take a while to get this one finished as well.

From what I gather using the xlobby thin client is not always straightforward on the Simpad (btw: which CE version do you use?).

As a result I have also been looking at remote desktop applications as well.
One option that seems to look promising is the Pebbles Remote Commander.
Have you tried this route?

Remember, you are not alone.

Cheers,
Johan

Hi, thanks for your response,

I have not seen the "pebbles" software before but have just been looking at it and it could be an option i think. The main problem I can see it that the simpad would have to display the same as what is shown on the main screen. It would still be better than nothing though.

I am using CE 4.1 software on the simpad for reference.

I would hope there are others on here that have resolved the problem themselves and can tell us how

I'm not really sure if the Remote Commander works on 4.1.

Hello Newstuart,

My curiousity got the better of me so today I spent a couple of hours with Remote Commander, Simpad and Xlobby.

The good news is I can control Xlobby through Remote Commander from my Simpad and it seems pretty snappy as well.

The bad news is I can only see part of the Xlobby screen (or any remote screen for that matter) on my Simpad. It will accept commands like screentapping etc. from "the black part" but the top 80% of the screen stay black.

Oh well, it seems like I am onto something so I will report back when there's more progress.

Anyone here experience the same problems with Remote Commander?

Cheers,
Johan

Not sure if 'Remote2PC' works with 'CE'.

http://www.z2software.com

It's what I use with my PPC - Works great and is really fast.

Hello Twit (are you sure you want to keep this nickname?)

Thanks for the suggestion.

It seems to support HPC2000 (=CE 3.0) so it could be a viable alternative.
Somewhere on the net there´s a mention of it needing almost 50 Mb of memory on the client for full colour, which would be stretching it a bit on my 64 Mb Simpad.

I´ve sent a support request to Pebbles Software but if they can´t help me I definitely will have a look at Remote2PC. (their website seems down at this time)

Cheers,
Johan

Hi,

What version of .Net CF are you using? I run xlobby as a thin client on CE 4.1 on RoomVue with no problems. Make sure you have both .Net Framework 1.1 and 2.0 installed on the server PC and then install only .Net Compact Framewrk 1.0 via Activesync. This should result in the Simpad asking you to install the files. After clicking yes you should be able to see a folder within program files. Then load the xlobby files and you should be good to go. You do not require .Net Compact Framewrk 2.

Hope this helps.

Hello capecodscot,

Thanks for your answer.

I am using HPC2000 (=CE 3.0) om my Simpad, which I like until now. The simpad was bought mainly to control Xlobby. As I understand it the thin client only works from CE 4.0 and upwards due to the .NET requirement.

Upgrading my Simpad is an option, but as I said I like it the way it is now. At this time I consider upgrading my last resort and will first try other means to the end like using the webserver capability or remote desktop solutions.

Cheers,
Johan
