spider search for cover art not working

Postby buffotoad on Wed Sep 06, 2006 4:45 pm

The spider search for cover art used to work for me, but not now. I made some changes to the skin, but I don't know of anything I did to affect the spider. I have probably done something stupid, but I can't figure out what it is.

When I try a search, it indicates that it is 'searching' the sites that I select, but comes up with no 'search results'. I have tried broad search terms, such as 'true', but still no search results are displayed.

I am not running a firewall, and if I use Internet Explorer, I can get results doing a search on Amazon.

Any ideas of what I am missing?

Thanks for any help.

Have you updated your spiders lately? Download from here and replace old with new.

rembitis - upon your suggestion, I did that, but still not working.

Also, I went back to the 'default' skin, which is untouched by me, but that didn't make a difference either.

Thanks for the reply!

Did you restart Xlobby after copying the spiders from the zip file to the Xlobby\Spiders directory?

Test if the spider works under F2\Edit Database - that will remove any skinning related issues from the equation. If it's still not working let us know which spider (ie Music - Amazon.com or whatever).

I'm having the same issue

Updated to latest spiders and although using the F2/Edit database says it finds covers/info etc they do not appear in the boxes to save them

Anyone else having this issue? It is only recently it has begun.

Had a play around and only the Walmart.com spider works

The rest say they have found items and are "downloading cover" etc but nothing appears in the box and nothing is selectable.

tswhite - yes, unfortunately I did restart xlobby after updating the spiders.

I have been trying it using F2\Edit Database\Spiders.

P3rv3rt B3ar - I have made the box large, so it shouldn't be an issue.

I highlight every dvd site listed - amazon.com, buy.com, dvdtown.com, walmart.com, imdb.com.

When I click the 'search' button, under the 'search' button, it displays 'searching amazon.com', 'searching buy.com', etc, and then after searching each site, 'ready' will be displayed.

But the 'search results' box remains empty.

I've tried very basic, generic search criteria such as 'true', which should return a lot of hits, but still get nothing.

Thanks to all for helping.

OK - my problem is a connectivity issue, but I don't understand it.

During the time that the spiders haven't been working for me I have been running Xlobby without a firewall running on the PC. XP Firewall is turned off (I never use it), and Sygate Personal Firewall has not been started.

Just now, I started Sygate Personal Firewall so that I could try to diagnose what is happening. And the spiders worked!

Just to be certain, I restarted the pc and didn't start Sygate. The spiders didn't work. So I started Sygate, and the spiders worked again.

What I don't understand is that I can get to any internet site successfully without Sygate running, so I didn't think it would influence Xlobby. But somehow it does.

This goes against what I thought was my basic understanding - that incoming and outgoing were unrestricted when a firewall wasn't running. But for some reason that is not the case. There is certainly more to this than I understand. I will try to figure it out.

Why would the spiders work only when my firewall is running? Does anyone have an idea of why this would happen?

Again, thanks to all for the time and help.

FYI - it turns out there is a bug in Sygate Firewall. An executable (smc.exe) will start up and stay resident even if the firewall isn't started. It can be manually stopped and prevented from auto-loading. Sygate no longer supports the product, so the bug won't be fixed.

Thanks for the help, and I hope the others reporting problems with the spiders get them resolved.

Same thing here....

I am having no luck getting all of the cover art to download. It does the same thing for me....says it is downloading but nothing shows up.

Had limited success with movie covers but none with album art. Really do not want to have to manually update 300 albums!

I do have a Linksys firewall.....is there a particular port I need to open?

When I put a movie in Xlobby I can do a search (from the edit movie database screen) for the cover and it usually finds it, but when I pull up the movie in xlobby, the info does not show up. Then I do a search there and it does not find anything.....sometimes the info gets populated correctly but sometimes not.

Any ideas??
