Problems with alphabetical file order

Postby Rizlaw on Wed Jul 19, 2006 6:01 pm

I am having a problem with XLobby's ability to list some of my multi disc movies in correct alphabetical file order using the latest version of XL and the default skin. A particular annoyance is Lord of the Rings (single and Extended disc versions). My movie folders for each film are named as follows (the numbers in braces preceding each title indicate the actual order XL is displaying the movie coverart in the Movies Menu, they are NOT part of the title):

{6} LORD OF THE RINGS - FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
{9} LORD OF THE RINGS - THE TWO TOWERS
{8} LORD OF THE RINGS - RETURN OF THE KING
{7} LORD OF THE RINGS - FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING Ext1
{1} LORD OF THE RINGS - FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING Ext2
{4} LORD OF THE RINGS - THE TWO TOWERS Ext1
{3} LORD OF THE RINGS - THE TWO TOWERS Ext2
{5} LORD OF THE RINGS - RETURN OF THE KING Ext1
{2} LORD OF THE RINGS - RETURN OF THE KING Ext2

The display order I would expect is:

{1} LORD OF THE RINGS - FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
{2} LORD OF THE RINGS - FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING Ext1
{3} LORD OF THE RINGS - FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING Ext2

{4} LORD OF THE RINGS - RETURN OF THE KING
{5} LORD OF THE RINGS - RETURN OF THE KING Ext1
{6} LORD OF THE RINGS - RETURN OF THE KING Ext2

{7} LORD OF THE RINGS - THE TWO TOWERS
{8} LORD OF THE RINGS - THE TWO TOWERS Ext1
{9} LORD OF THE RINGS - THE TWO TOWERS Ext2

Re-sorting doesn't work. Does anyone have a solution?

sorting doesnt work? What are you sorting by? Parameter, display, filename, title or what? I would try these first. If not you could just give them a sort "tag" in the database editor and sort it by it.
Add new field to all categories called sortorder. All of the info for this new field would be are 1,2,3...
Then in your sort, sort by sortorder. It will work.

I use DVDprofiler to catalogue my movies and to deal with the problem you are having I have added a "sort title" to my problem titles. If you click on a title in your collection (in DVDprofiler) and then click the "Personalize" button it will have a field right under the "title" field called "Sort Title" if you put something more usefull into this like "Lord of the Rings 1, 1", "Lord of the Rings 1, 2", "Lord of the Rings 2, 1"...etc

After adding that to any titles that are being problematic and importing the db into XLobby just enter sorttitle into the "Sort Order" field in your movie db and it will put them in the right order, it will still show the original title but it will sort by the title you have assigned. I think that this is the easiest way to deal with sequels that have names instead of numbers and you don't have to worry about constantly updating your numbers for the whole collection when you add a new movie.

Hope that made sense and helps, if not feel free to ask for more clairification.

Good Luck,
Brian

Sorry I took so long to respond. I was sorting the "movie" database" in XL by "sorttitle" which was the "default" parameter in my new installation of XL. Since there was no drop down arrow to display different sort parameters, I wasn't sure what other terms coud be used until I read your post. I truly wish the author of this excellent program could find the time to write a comprehensive and current guide on all of the features and how to properly use and implement them. The Beginner's Guide I downloaded, leaves out much IMHO.

Anyway, using "title" worked just fine to solve my problem.Thanks. :D
