How to; EPG-guide

Postby amtssp on Sat Sep 11, 2004 8:36 am

Hi I think it would be a good idea if we all in this thread added all our small tweaks we had to use in order to get the EPG inside xlobby working. Furthermore, if we could write a complete guide how to use the EPG and eventually figure out how to use the EPG for recording - I think this would be informative for many of us.

But let me start, I have found out using o2grabber that:

1. In the configuration menu you need to choose a "time offset" value,, if you keep it at default then xlobby freezes during startup.

2. You need o2grabber to save the produced xml file as xmltv.xml in the xlobby\xmltv directory, otherwise the EPG won't show.

PS: I would like to put in a screen-capture - but how?

Upload the screeen image to a server, you own homepageserver for example.
now put (img)http://myhompageserver/mypictyre.jpg(/img) in your message( replace ( by [

For first-timers this step-by-step procedure may help. As Arthur posted, the Xlobby program guide requires the file xmltv.xml to be placed in the xmltv folder. There are several programs available for downloading TV program listings from the internet and saving the data in xml format. o2grabber seems to be popular in Europe, but does not currently support North America. I'm using the freeware program xmltv. I used the following steps to configure xmltv:

1) Download xmltv from
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... p_id=39046
The home page for xmltv is at:
http://membled.com/work/apps/xmltv/

2) Extract the files from xmltv.zip to a folder of your choice. I chose C:\program files\xmltv.

Read the quickstart quide located in doc\Quickstart.txt to find the recommended grabber script for your country. For the USA, I'm using tv_grab_na_dd. The grabber scripts are included with xmltv.

3) Configure xmltv by opening a Windows command shell (click on Start > Run and enter "cmd").
At the command prompt type:

xmltv.exe your_grabber --configure
For example:
xmltv.exe tv_grab_na_dd --configure

Follow the prompts for entering your time zone and other information.
You may need to signup for an account at Zap2it depending on which
grapper you use. It so, the xmltv program will specify which web site to
sign up at. For the USA, I signed up at http://labs.zap2it.com/

4) Now that xmltv is configured, type the following in the command shell:

xmltv.exe your_grapper > xmltv.xml
For example:
xmltv.exe tv_grab_na_dd > xmltv.xml

This may take a few minutes to complete. Your program quide is now saved in the file xmltv.xml.

6) Copy the program guide xmltv.xml to the C:\Program Files\Xlobby\xmltv folder.

7) Start XLobby and you should see the program guide!

Hope this helps.

Not all the skins support the EPG. I'm using Heavy Metal which does not, but I'll be modifying it eventually to add the feature. To test the EPG, switch to the default skin and click the TV Guide button in the main menu. You should see the EPG.

Download the xmltv guide automatically

Postby SteveK on Fri Mar 04, 2005 1:59 am

I'm using the Windows Scheduler to automate downloading of the xmltv guide. Information on using the scheduler is here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... 13&sd=tech

I created a DOS batch file called Run_xmltv.bat. In the file enter this line:

C:\Progra~1\xmltv\xmltv.exe tv_grab_na_dd > C:\Progra~1\Xlobby\xmltv\xmltv.xml

You will need to modify the text if your xmltv.exe file is located in a directory other than c:\Program Files\xmltv. Also, I'm assuming your Xlobby directory is C:\Program Files\Xlobby.

Next, run the Windows Scheduler and tell it to execute Run_xmltv.bat once each day (or however often you wish).

The EPG software is not completed yet. It's pretty much what-you-see is what-you-get at this point.

Thank you SteveK,

Steven has already made a wonder job. I am sure the future EPG will be very nice too.

Best regards,
