XNET - getting running and database edits...

Postby kolemieux on Fri Jan 07, 2005 4:16 pm

Guys,

Sorry for the lame question - I have been focusing on other areas of Xlobby but have had a need for Xnet - and am reading about how cool it is indeed.

1 - I am trying to get things up and running, I create the connection fine, but don't seem to get the database population on the client? Any hints or tips here would be so much appreciated. All of my drive mappings on the network from pc to pc reference the same letters so having a centralized DB would be fantastic.

2 - From one of my Xnet clients - i.e. a laptop - when in Xnet mode (i.e. once I tackle #1 above - can I EDIT those databases. I am hoping this is the case???? Especially with some of the new FieldAd features and spiders this would be so nice.

I am ever so appreciative of any help. I will continue to dig the forums for my answers as well.

At the moment xnet is in its infancy, you can connect a client to a server, you have to enable the server as a server and note the ip address or server name and then on the client connect to that ip/name, the next time you start the client it will get the database from the server. It works best if you use unc (I think thats the right term, I mean \\server\music )instead of mapped drives.

Once connected you can do a little (but not much more, this is still very much in development, I only use the databasing sharing part) from the xnet tab of the client.

If you need more detail please ask.

Thanks a lot for the reply. The ONLY piece I really want is centralzed DB control. Will this include MOVIES as well ? I am working it as we speak. If I use "drive letters" do I still (on the Client) have to point the paths to the drive letters? that I am missing...

Sorry BUT thanks!!!!!!!!

No, on the client you dont have to point the paths but use unc paths on the server. The first time a client connects to a server it downloads the database and AFAIR fills in the paths for the client. Yes you can do the same for films.
