Anyone using Q1, Nokia 770 or others?

Postby WannaTheater on Sun Jul 19, 2009 2:02 am

I am looking to upgrade some xlobby control (last free version). I currently have xlobby running on an HTPC cnd control from a VGA touchscreen, and also control using PPC skin for a Dell Axim. I would like to upgrade, and basically get away from wired VGA touchscreen for main xlobby control. Here are my thoughts:

1) eBay viewsonic airpanels - not sure since I dont think they make replacement batteries.
2) Q1 - Anyone using this? If so, how? And what are your results?
3) Nokia 770 - How about this? Results?
4) Archos?

Any other things I should be looking at?

Any advice, experiences, pros and cons would be greatly appreciated!

I used a 770 with the free ver. Worked fine.
Doesn't work with commercial version last time I checked.

Did you run the xlobby client software? Or did you use something like VNC on the Nokia? How was response time? Any problems with staying connected? Thanks!

I just used the browser as the 770 is a Unix/Linux variant.

A VNC type connection would prob be better. I did get some disconnects when I 'touched' too many events too quickly.
But, the response time was fine.

Sorry. I turned on FreeLobby's Webserver and used the 770's Web browser to control the FreeLobby server.
Clear?

YThanks. I think I read someplace you needed to "physically refresh" on the 770 while accessing webserver from last free version? Bummer!

Yeah. Steven had fixed it earlier but that need to refresh crept back in.

I've used both the Samsung Q1 and Tablet Kiosk with excellent results but would not recommend Viewsonic.

thanks for the input capacodscot.... I've been skeptical about the viewsonic, and the more I hear about bad results, the mode I steer clear.
For the Q1 and tabletkisok, Were you use the web interface, remote desktop, or the Xlobby client?

I have used the web interface and the Xlobby client. Both work very well. The client works well and is quick with the advantage of you also being able to run a full version on the Q1 as well. I take mine in the car and plug it in to the sound system - The kids can also watch movies. All in all pretty cool - full automation control and multimedia on the hoof!

Cool! Regarding the Q1, I thought that was linux OS? Did you have to do anything special to get XL (free version) to run on it? Doesn't XL (full and client) require a Windows OS and .net?

It runs Windows - in fact I run Windows 7 on it as it is quicker.

Picked up 3 Fujitsu Stylystic 1600's from Fleebay for $50 shipped. All came with WIN95, which I upgraded to WIN98SE, they have a P166Mhz CPU with 96MB RAM. They are plenty fast to boot up using Win98SE and from there I load IE and use them as remotes in 800X600 resolution. They talk with my network via some Netgear card's that I purchased for $25 for 3. THey weigh 4lbs but i keep mind in the stand most of the time, and the size is about the size of a regular(US) size of paper 8.5"X11. These are pretty much the same as the 3400/3500 models just less powerful. But since I only need to run a webclient on them, they're plenty powerful. I may try Linux on one of them to see if I can get any better performace, but I'm sure Im gonna have issues getting the touchscreen to work under Linux.

I actually upgraded .NET to 2.0 and IE to version 6 and now i am running the Thin client and it works %500 better than the webserver, which refreshes slowly and tends to crash a lot.

Just wanted to add my vote to avoid viewsonic airpanel tablets. Not because they don't work, they work great. The reason to avoid them is that any airpanels you find, including still new in box, will have old batteries. The Viewsonic batteries have a shelf life of about 5 years. These batteries were originally manufactured in 2003 are at the end of life. There are no new batteries being made for the Airpanels; I have two viewsonic tablets that went in the trash because of this. And yes, I had the batteries professionally rebuilt but they didn't last long after that.
