Skin speed?

Postby Colby on Fri Jul 23, 2004 7:13 am

Lately as I update my skin, and install the newer exe's, I am experiencing real lag in my navigation. Whats changing. I know my skin is graphically intense with a LoT of high res images. Im streamlining that. But it still takes forever for the show/hide to work, and navigating normal buttons.
It seems like until the button images are viewed for the first time they arent loaded in ram or cache or something. This would mean everytime I start Xl I would have to go to every page and "preload" the graphics before it would run nice. (not to mention overlays) :(

What changes have come to Xl recently that would make my skin slower than normal?

What things bog down a skin?

I've noticed this too. Things getting slower after a restart. I just thought my htpc was getting bogged down.

I am preparing an updated skin, and optimizing it the best I can. I wont be able to send it right away. Does the Navigation override affect the skin speed, cause thats one of the things Ive been changing. I basically want to know how to streamline a skin. What things in general bog them down?

a big thing that will cause slow downs is a high resolution background. It takes alot of time to paint those to the screen. Lots of buttons can do it to if they are are also high resolution and they need to be scaled down.

Navigation overrides should do nothing to the speed, if anything they speed things up.

I know when I got to playing with jowaldos skin a few weeks ago I noticed a lot of places to improve my code, so when you get yours ready I'm sure I will find things to improve after trying it.
