Viewsonic Airpanel

Postby rtarver on Fri Dec 10, 2004 2:59 pm

I was just wondering if I could use a viewsonic airpane with xlobby in server/client mode. Is there any reason I couldn't use this panel in pocket pc mode since it runs on windows ce? I'm thinking this is a cheap and easy way to put a wireless control screen downstairs.

Thanks for any input.

Nope you can't do that. The airpanel is simply a remote desktop and I don't think it allows you to see the desktop on the PC and the airpanel concurrently (XP limitation). Think of it as a wireless touchscreen monitor, not a tabletPC running CE. The airpanels are almost $1000 anyway, which to me is not a cheap option for wireless control, especially since you can get a dell axim x30 for less than half that. You can get open frame touchscreen monitors like the ones I have for $600 http://www.planar.com/products/Embedded_Display_Sol/openframe/LA17.html

plug them into a MiniITX PC and you have a fully capable xlobby client (once xNET actually works) that can play music and DVDs for close to the same price. Add Sagetvclient and you can even watch TV. I have 2 of these setups ready for my bar/gameroom when I finish building it out this winter.

Chad,

I already have an ELO touchscreen upstairs in the theater room, so I agree that's the way to go. I have another touchscreen downstairs but am having difficulty getting touchscreen capability to pass over a kvm switch via cat5. I can get usb mouse and video, but no touchscreen. I agree with the remote desktop... I don't want to do that, but I thought the airpanel would work as a wireless CE device... but I guess that takes some work?

Thanks,

Russ

Im bringing this one back to life. Anyone heard of any news about wireless displays using 802.11g or higher? I just got my new airpanel in and its a blast, i just need to get a better refresh which can only be accomplished through more data tranfer. It's a beautiful display though. Just wish i could run client on it. i think though if they get these working with G that even my HDTV could be transmitted wirelessly. sweet

I've heard from philips they will make a new windowsce touchscreen with .g technology. The first date was december, now, they say it's februar...

For the transfer speed, you should not make 100% but less.

There is another option for the airpanel. I have it connected to an old pc and have it running in client mode. Reason being that i want to view on my theater screen, xlobby and mainly video. Is the airpanel the answer to all my problems...no but its a great solution for a large screen wireless control. By the way do you know that a one way transmission 15" wireless display for a Crestron system will set you back over $4300!!! We are saving some bucks here. I got mine for less than $300.
