HD resolutions

Postby billberet on Thu Jan 05, 2012 4:20 pm

OK, i need some schooling here on resolutions
i fully inderstand the P and the I in 1080i and 720p

i am moving away from DVD's, they seem blurry to me now after watching BluRay.
question is, when going to HD resolutions, does NTSC or PAL come into play?
example, i have 3 different 'battlefield LA' versions:
all versions below say the movie is 1080p, but which is right? to me, they look like 720p.
does the (1920,1280) determine if it's 1080p or 720p or does the (800,720) determine it?
or any video over (800) is 1080p while below (800) is 720p?

version 1 - 1920x800
version 2 - 1920x816
version 3 - 1920x536
version 4 - 1280x720

i've read tons of blogs on HD and they never seem to say what exactly is 720p or 1080p resolution.

after further research, i believe it's the (1920,1280) that determines 1080 or 720

any source that is 1920x? is considered 1080
any source that is 1280x? is considered 720
any source that is 852x? is considered 480

agree or disagree?

agreed

The confusion tends to arrise because people dont normally encode the black bars at the bottom of wide-wide screen films (i forgot the ratio 2.40:1?)

Not sure if 852x even has a name i guess its a homebrew?, but i would call it 852 :)

I think dvd was 480.

correct, all dvd's are encoded at 480, and with my new HD projector, i just cannot watch any movie on it that is not HD. gives me a headache because of the blur. I am currently using ffdshow to play my mkv files, still trying to get rid of a slight judder when there is any panning. i know it's been a big issue since the beginning of the HD formats, and it will only happen during pans.

has anyone else played bluray on a tv from their pc? playing on a pc works fine, it's only when outputting to a tv this becomes an issue. i believe it is from the interpalation between the frames. movies are encoded at 1080/24 and your tv plays /60.
so when the extra frames are created in between the real frames, the 'judder' occurs.
the tv would have to have a refresh rate of a multiple of 24 to eliminate the judder.
refresh rate: 48 / 72 / 96 / 120

forums talk about it in great length, and no one seems to have a resolution, it's all best guess, just like science. ;)
anyone have any luck playing bluray .mkv files?

**edit**
some people have used coreAVC instead of ffdshow, this could be another avenue to go down.

the best test of your system, start any of the starwars movies, and watch the beginning yellow scrolling text.
if it's smooth, your good, if you have micro studders, welcome to my world !!!!!

Wish i could consult with Sheldon right about now !!!!!

Hi
To get rid of judder I change the screen frequence depending on the source. Pal=50 and ntsc=60. Works perfect for me
I use mediainfo to find out the source then switch auto before the nedia starts to play. Have to use external player for this though

but for tru HD source, their is no pal or ntsc.
it's a hd resolution set at 23.9p fps, problem is our tv's play either 60-50 fps.

i've been playing with the powerstrip trying to get as close to a multiple of 24 as i can.
then let the motion interpolation create the frames needed in between each physical frame.
i got most of the judder out, but i'm bad when it comes to perfection. i want fluid motion.
:)
