Using Multiple Soundcards with KX

Postby mwigtkm on Thu Aug 31, 2006 4:00 pm

For those of you using multiple soundcards with the KX drivers, are you having any skipping/lagging/etc. with your cards when they are being used at the same time?

I actually think it is an issue with the computer I have both of my cards installed in, but when I use both of them together, one of the cards begins to lag behind and will every so often introduce a bunch of static into the sound. However, if I just use either of the cards by itself (or with the onboard audio) I have no problems. I think it might be due to having them installed in an SFF computer with my PCI slots on the riser card. I just wanted to make sure it is not a driver issue before I go and rip open another computer to test out.

Thanks for your help in advance!

I did not experience what you are talking about with 2 Audigy cards installed. I had sync issues when playing the same thing through multiple outputs, but it didn't matter if I "spanned" cards or not. It was always the same. Even when I had just one M-Audio Delta1010LT card.

It sounds like you are having a hardware issue. Probably IRQ. Try, if you can, changing the slot of one of the cards.

Yeah unfortunately since it is an SFF case, I have a choice of 2 full size PCI slots and one half height, so I am pretty much out of luck. Darn. I was hoping to just use this old SFF that I had to keep power consumption low. Oh well. Back to the drawing board!

I have 2 Audigy Cards, 6 zones on KX, 6 winamps running. Absolutely rock solid.

The server is a 2.8GHz Celeron, 1Gb memory and a fairly swift 160Gb hard drive. It also runs a bunch of other home automation software. But overall, apart from memory, barely breaks sweat. XL does seem memory hungry the PC is often using over over 500Mb paged memory.

If you are runnning on an "old SFF" you may have resource probs elsewhere perhaps - memory a good starting point? But it does sound a bit like a prob on thePCI...

I was able to drop both cards into a different computer (sempron 2600+) and they work perfectly. Right now they are on different IRQ's and no problems. It is only a temp solution until I can figure out what I want to do as far as comps. I was able to get all 5 outputs (2 zones per Live! Value card and 1 zone with the integrated audio) thru only 1 winamp instance. Totally worked like I had hoped so processing power isn't a big deal.
