Multi zone audio

Postby pjsmith on Wed Apr 11, 2007 6:57 am

Hi,

I'm looking for a multi zone solution. The threads I have found / read are a bit dated, and there seems various ways to do this.

I was wondering... If I am starting from fresh, what would be the recomended or supported way to run to 5 or 6 zones? I don't mind if it requires a client in each room.

What is the state of this now? Is multi zone working?

Thanks.

pjsmith...Welcome to xLobby!!!

Multi-zoning is alive and well. Take a look at Marbles_00's awesome Zoneskin3 to get a handle on it and take it from there to wherever you want to go. You will need a multi-channel amp too, some of us were lucky enough to pick up a few of these amps that rembetis pointed out a few months ago.

Good luck with your project.

Multizone works, but not the "XLobby" way. Meaning that there hasn't been too much success with syncing with the Xlobby command. That being said, I and others have successfully used Xlobby with PervTalk, mulitple instances of Winamp/Foobar, the KX drivers and Audigy/Live cards. Currently I have a 7 zone system (3 up and running...just have to get time to install the rest of the speakers), and 3 different ways to sync...mainfloor, upstairs or whole house.

I've done it using 10 instances of Winamp. Each zone has a dedicated winamp instance. Another way of doing it is using the above and also using VAC (Virtual Audio Cable), a member here named Scalt has successfully got it running using VAC. Another pioneer (to me) is rhinoman. He has done it mainly with hardware...pretty slick system if I do say so myself.

We have numerous posts on getting it up and running...below are a few:

In the zip is a docuement on setting it up.

Also click on my signature, or my "WWW" button to view more of how I've done it.

And we are all here to help you out, so don't hesitate to ask.

Hope this helps.

*Added Edit*
OH and most recently I've been able to set up a VFD to display Now Playing info (artist/track/album) for all 10 zones (outside of using Xlobby mind you, but still useful)...have a gander at how it is done here - http://www.xlobby.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5576

Many thanks for the comprehensive pointers.

I'm going to read through it all and make a shopping list!
