ZP will most definitly play .mov files. It can be a pain to get configured correctly, and can be quirky on web based .mov files though. You've got several options in ZP, just search for the relevant keywords in the Inmatrix forums:
1) Default Quicktime Active X component playback (uses a lot of cpu, but has great compatibility with the different .mov types, can be a little quirky with web based mov's)
2)
Quicktime Alternative codecs (great compatibility, good cpu usage, I've never tried it with web based mov's but should work)
3) Haali or Gabest splitters with FDDShow (best cpu usage, some compatiblity issues, does not seem to work with web based url's).
If you're watching Large format or smaller .mov files from web based sources you're best bet with ZP is probably the ActiveX component. If you're doing 480p or higher mov's then I would suggest trying the Quicktime Alternative codecs. If you're playing files from the local hard drive you should give the Haali\Gabest\FDDShow route a try.
The other option to avoid installing Apple Quicktime is to use MPC (Media Player Classic) that's available wih the Quicktime Alternative download. Lots of folks use this to avoid the bloat associated with Apple's software - check out the Apple Movie Trailers Utility thread in the Plugins forum.
I ran MPC for a while until I installed something else that stepped on it. Never have figured out what happened or how to fix it - I'll try it again whenever I do a fresh install. Right now I'm running Haali\FDDShow and just not worrying about web based url's.
Sadly - none of the options are perfect, you just need to pick one that works best for you.
good luck,
