Keeping my present setup

Postby stuartambient on Tue Apr 13, 2004 1:14 pm

I want to get the lastest alpha. Unfortunately I've made a number of changes that I don't want to lose. These were not saved as a seperate skin. Some are just buttons moved around, others background changes.

How can I install the latest greatest without mucking my current config ?

Thanks
Stuart

are using alpha 39 or b4? because there may be some problems updating to release 40 and on. In release 40 we got the event manager (a super powerful customizble tool.)

If all you did was move buttons around and not change events or anything than all you have to do is download and unzip the new xlobby version into a directory. Then copy the default folder from the old skin directory and paste it into the new skins directory after renaming it. You will then have 2 skins: default and yournewname. Load xlobby with the new .exe. Then you can hit f2 and change skins to yournewname and restart xlobby. Also if you have any custom buttons or backgrounds you will need to copy them to the appropriate folder in the new install.
The default will remain intact.

Another way would be to copy and paste the old xml files (pages) that were changed from the old Skin/Defualt folder to the new one (overwriting the new xmls). This is handy if you changed events or stuff.

Dont muck up any of your previous install of xlobby, just create a new directory with the new version to see how it all works out. There will be a new .exe file to launch the new version.

Also because youre upgrading, there will be new features & tools, explore and take advantage of them.

Any problems let us know.

Is there a general strategy in upgrading, if we *did* change events? For example, I'm on 40.2 pre 11, using jowaldo's skin. I'm in the process of defining all of my remote events.

Is there an easy way to take the differences of my old stuff and apply it to the new versions?

thanks!

PS - if only all software categorized as a "prerelease" was this polished and feature-rich!!

A good rule of thumb is to just copy the whole xlobby folder and make a complete duplicate of it, and then mess with upgrading, so in case anything bad happens you could easily go back.

Are you saving you events under your skin folder? I try to use events ONLY from there, that way its super easy to copy my skin to another install of xlobby. If there are any events in the root xlobby eventgroups folder (that come from the default install/skin) that I want to use, I just drag that event into my skin eventgroups folder when I'm in the event manager.

Hope that helps.

Yes, I believe everything is under the skin folder. (although I don't claim to understand why commands work there and not in the regular folder)

Luckily I haven't programmed much yet, so I can just move anew to the new release.

But lets say you update your skin, jowaldo - will it be easy to xfer the setup?

Its possible... but not super easy... say you changed the weather page a lot... I have completley redone it since the last release. So if you update it to my newest one, its going to overwrite it. But if you just want some custom commands brought over... it wouldn't be to hard, but any way you look at it, its gonna take some work :(
