RSS News Feeds and URL: How to provide hyperlink ?

Postby hvs69 on Tue Oct 26, 2004 6:15 pm

Hi,

I did a search but could not find it. Most RSS feeds have a URL (http link)associated with each item. Is there any way to put a button on the news page which opens a browser directed to the http link for that particular item of ther RSS database ?

Let me know if this has been implemented or else I will move the post to feature request forum.

Thanks.

i can't recommend an off-the-shelf solution, but my xsl plugin at http://writtorrent.sf.net can provide a button the ability to transform any xml into another via XSL transformations. That is, you can make an RSS feed into whatever XLobby database format you desire. Can take a bit to set it up, but could definately help you acheive this if the features are not yet available in the RSS newsreader subsystem.

This may be what you are looking for:

I created a screen (call it "news viewer") with a web page window on it and a single button with a back event.

I created an even that includes a go to screen ("news viewer") and then a go to url (%news>link%)

Then I set up the news category on the news page so navigating to a line displays the summary in a window and clicking on the line launches the page.

Thats it

Hope this helps

NJMak,

Your solution is almost working.

However, the "goto URL" event is adding an extra "http://" so the browser sees http://http://xyz.com and I get an error.

How do I fix that ? Thanks.

Not sure what it could be -

I have set it up on the visual skin and one of my own (just did it again on a fresh version of the visual skin to make sure).

Ideas:
On the "news viewer" screen do you have a base web page load? I have it set up so google loads as the default and the news link reloads the page. If you don't have a page load by default I'm not sure what would happen.

Have you tried different feeds? I have tested with mostly yahoo or rueters rss feeds. Also, maybe there is an issue with the database (have you deleted and recreated the database?)

I am running a slightly older xlobby release (1.0.1679.3223), not sure if anything has changed lately that would impact it.

Hope this helps, Good luck

NJMAK,

You were right, there is a problem with one particular RSS feed. I still don't what exactly is wrong with it because the link field looks normal to me. Your solution works fine with other RSS feeds. Thanks a lot for your help.

If you get a chance could you please look at the following RSS feed that I am having this problem with. Let me know if you can figure out what is wrong with it. Your help will be greatly appreiciated.

Glad to hear it works,
Not sure about the specific feed, I couldn't make it work either.
Does it work in a normal news reader?
Good luck

NJMak,

Thanks for trying. I think you should post this in Tips & Tricks forum. I can bet that not many people know about this.
