PDA or Touch Screen LCD??

Postby arkania on Sat Sep 24, 2005 2:06 pm

Looking for some feedback guys on your thoughts on using a Pocket PC for remote control of Xlobby versus a Touch Screen.

I'm toying with the idea of purchasing a touch screen conversion kit for my 15" Lcd screen and building cabinet for it. It would then become the control centre for my theatre.

I do have a Dell Axim which I have tried with Xlobby but I find a couple problems with this setup:

1. Power Management! If you use a PDA what do you do to conserve power? I hate having the unit turn off to save the battery as it becomes a pain to turn it back on just to turn down the volume, etc, as I need it. I've tried having stay on but if I forget to turn it off it kills the battery and I lose my settings. What do you guys do?

2. It's kinda of sluggish sometimes to respond.

3. Size of the screen. I sometimes find it a pain to switch between different screens (because of size limitations) to perform different functions.

So I was thinking maybe a touch screen monitor would be a much better solution. It gives me a large surface area for buttons and should allow me to have all the functions I need on one screen. What do you guys think? I appreciate your feedback.

Gary.

It completely depends on what works with your setup. Essentially, Xlobby will be your remote control. Is there space for the touchscreen to sit by your seat?

I was thinking of constructing a special stand/cabinet for the touchscreen which would be situated beside my couch (which is located along the back wall of my theatre, on a riser).. I think I have enough room to accomplish this.

If you can control it from your seat without getting up, then the touchscreen is the way to go.

Hy hjackson,
one question, I'm curious ;)....
the screen/skin on your touchscreen, look different than this one on your projector, is it right ? How do you do that ? are you using a thin client on the same machine ?
