Trailer Repository

Postby ddiv on Thu Mar 25, 2004 10:09 pm

Well after many days of ripping trailers, Ive almost finished all of the ones in my collection. There are many DVDs that had no trailer but I think I will end up with somewhere close to 180 ( im at 150 right now). If anyone wants to set up a place to host trailers I will gladly upload them all...I cant host them myself as I dont want to leave my htpc connected to the net. There is approximately 12 gigs of trailers right now..perhaps it will grow to 15 by the end. I removed the green preview screen from 99% of them (in the beginning I wasnt using DVDshrink).

Let me know!

that sounds awesome...but I dont think there is anyway you will be able to host so much data in one place and keep it there for any longer then a few days....reason being....trailers are just to damn popular.

might I suggest a different approach....I have a dvdburner and I'm sure other people do....maybe we (people on the forum) should put together some kind of private network for burning these trailers on a couple dvds and sending them out to people that want them....the only cost should be the cost of the dvds since it would be illegal to make a profit off them. At first we would only have a few people with the dvds...but I think it would soon grow. Either way I am interested in getting these trailers.

Steven,
Maybe a DVD that we could sort of pass around? I don't know if that would work but there must be a way.

ddiv,
How big, on average, is the file size for each trailer?

Each trailer ranges from 50-100 megs generally.

I was thinking someone could host an ftp on their computer...I dont think having and distributing trailers is illegal especially for this purpose. We could set it up so only people from this forum had the login info and anyone else would have to request it from the host. Also, this means that people could only download what they wanted as Im sure many people wont be interested in all my movie selection. I just think with the international presence a hard copy based distribution would be difficult.

Hrrmmm.... Soul Seek might be the answer, who ever is hosting can just set up a use list and such for poeple from the board. I'm not sure if they run offa parts like say emule, i'll check it tonight, it might work out nicely with a few seeders and such. Hrrmmm

Ive never used soul seek, but its a possibility...the reason I was thinking FTP is because its easy to set up priviledges its got quick speeds comparably and people can upload their own trailers to the db. I just dont want to have to leave my htpc on the net longer than it takes to transfer all files to someone willing to host them.

Id host themon one of my other computers, but I dont think my bandwidth would last very long...does anyone have unlimited bandwidth??

I get it now. I actually like this approach a lot. We could either "donate" & get a disc of trailers as a perk or send in a blank disc of our own for Steven to burn (or someone else that has a burner that would be open to doing this).

The idea of having someone's computer open like that is nice, but I wouldn't want to ask someone else to do that - I know I wouldn't volunteer for that one. Plus there are a lot of people out there still on dial-up. Downloading a compressed trailer from Apple would take forever, let alone one that is 2x-4x the file size. I can't see how that would work.

I'm definitely in for ripping/donating what I've got & I can start checking my DVD collection. Unfortunately I don't have a DVD burner, but I could burn them all to CD-Roms & send them that way.

So for people wanting only certain trailers they get a custom disc? What about people who have other trailers that many people want, do theirs get added to the "master collection"?

Im not sure I understand

Bittorrent

Postby Jarrod on Fri Mar 26, 2004 3:58 pm

How about setting up a bittorrent system?

For the unfamiliar, bittorrent allows you to share files between each other using 'torrents'. People can download any torrents you have open on your machine. If more than one person has the trailer torrent open, users can download from multiple sources at once, making the download MUCH faster.

To download a torrent you need a client program. There are a few out there to choose from. I recommend ABC (yet Another Bittorent Client - http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net ) as it allows multiple downloads in one window and allows you to create torrents to share your files.

Steven could setup the Bittorent tracker on this web server. Again there are a few trackers to choose from, but I recommend TorrentTrader (http://www.torrenttrader.com) as it's written in PHP which would work very nicely on this server. Only problem is, they lost their source code and are currently working on reprogramming the latest version.

The way it works:
1. People create torrents of their trailers using ABC (torrent files are ~100K depending on original file size)
2. People upload these torrents to the tracker and open the torrent on their PC.
3. Visitors to the tracker can then see any added torrents and download the torrent to their PC
4. ABC then takes over and using the torrent file it connects to anyone who has the torrent open or running on their PC.
5. Once you finish your download, you should leave the torrent running for as long as possible to allow other people to download it from you.

Bittorrent relies on people leaving torrents open on their PC to share files. The more people that have it, the more the uploading gets shared around and the faster downloading becomes.

All this software is free and there is a HUGE Bittorrent following online.

Just a suggestion :)

I've used bittorrents before and you need alot of people leaving there systems running to have a decent speed.....people will just download the trailers and close the torrent program...its nice to think people would leave the torrents open....but I dont think they would. Maybe we should have a temporary main FTP with all the trailers....and other people can download the main list and run temp FTPs or if they a burner....they can also send out dvds to people who want them(dial up...or people like me who will get in trouble for download 15gb in one month).....I just dont see anyway of putting 15gigs worth of data on the internet in a permanent way. And with the temp ftps we can also upload new trailers to keep the list current.

Yeah I agree with steven...a combo of both would probably suit most people. Personally I have never had much luck with torrent...my brothers love it but ive never had good transfer speed. But im open to anything really as long as the list can grow easily.

Question...if I am hosting an FTP, do peoples downloads go towards my upload bandwidth or is it all lumped into one? Im with rogers, but I guess wouldnt have a problem maxing out the bandwidth at least for a month. Lemme look into it

I'd love to help in some way, but there's no way that I can/will leave my system open. We run our own business & depend on these computers & if our system went down....well, it wouldn't be good. But I'd love to help with a trading/sharing system via mail. If there are others that want to do it that way then count me in.
