Baddabing:Heavy Metal 16X9 Server w-4X3 Client

Postby edbag4 on Tue Nov 16, 2004 4:00 pm

Baddabing:
Let me start by saying I really enjoy using Heavymetal, it is an excellent skin. I was wondering if you consider making an addition to the next revision of Heavymetal. I am currently running a 16X9 front projector off of my HTPC, your widescreen version works great for this. But I also run a Pen Tablet as a client that is 4X3. Whenever I logon as the client with the pen tablet the screen wraps and permanently messes up my 16X9 screen, I typically have to reload Heavymetal to straighten this out.

My question is, would it be possible for you to incorporate your 4X3 version of Heavymetal as a 4X3 client to the 16X9 server, similar to what you have done for the PPC? You might call it "4X3Clientmenu" or something like that. It would probably be useful to most who are using a client since the majority of them probably do not have 16X 9 screens on their tablets.

If this is not as straight forward as it seems it could be, please accept my apologies for asking and thanks for an excellent skin.

It sounds feasible...if I create 4:3 screens and use the PPC prefix it should be loaded by the client. I think I can give it a shot. 800x600 or 1024x768?

I'm running 800X600 which is the max for my Fujitsu Stylistic 2300. I am also running a PPC. Is it possible to create this as an additional client instead of replaceing the PPCmenu client?

Thanks BaddaBing!

Ok, before we get too far with this. I understand that when you run Xlobby on a PPC client it looks for, and loads all the screens with the PPC prefix. If you run the client on a PC - what skins does it load? I don't know as I am not running any Xlobby Clients on a PC. I'm starting to wonder is this is actually feasible.

Baddabing:
That's the current problem when running a client on a PC, it loads the "menu" which is the same one that you see on your server. That's why I run into issues, trying to run a 16X9 screen on a 4X3 client. The screen wraps the text (e.g xlobby splash screen on the client will read Xlobb then wrap the y underneath. The next time I run Xlobby on the server the screen is still wrapped just like it was on the 4X3 screen.

The sever text for the Xlobby2sd program is this: server:menu
I was thinking that we could use your existing 4X3 screens as another client, instead of "PPCmenu" you would add something like a "4X3menu".

As to whether it is doable or not, I don't know, but since you were able to add a PPC client after the fact I thought this would be possible as well.

Thanks for looking into it.

"That's the current problem when running a client on a PC, it loads the "menu" which is the same one that you see on your server."

The way to get around this is to edit your servers.txt file to look like this:

server:192.168.1.100
screen:clientmenu
resolution:auto
quality:100%
zone:1

That way your client will start in your 800x600 or 1024x768 menu screen.
Edbag4, I have used this method ever since you inspired me to make PC client skins.

hjackson - you are friggin brilliant! Thats the answer! The easiest way to do this will be to rename the screens in the 4:3 skin and add them to the 16:9 skin. Of course I will need to recreate all the 'goto' events to call the screens by the new name, but thats not a big deal. Then modify the server.tx file to call that screen set. I should be able to knock this out by this weekend. hjackson, I'd like to buy you a drink! Thanks!

Here are the HeavyMetal client screens for 1024x768. They will work for 800x600 as well with minor tweeking of a few fonts. Extract the zip file to your \\XLOBBY\SKINS\HeavyMetal directory. It will add the screens, backgrounds and events.

DO NOT OPEN THESE SCREENS IN A WIDESCREEN FORMAT OR IT WILL CORRUPT THEM - IF YOU NEED TO EDIT THEM DO SO ON THE CLIENT.

Here is the download:
