Xlobby. Zones and UNC. I am confused?

Postby AustnJPR on Tue Oct 17, 2006 8:10 pm

I have Xlobby setup on two systems. Start server on system 1. Start Xlobby and Xnet on system 2. All is well and can see everything. Now the rub. From my reading you need to use UNC on both the the server (System 1) and the Fat Client. (System 2) I cannot see how to set that up on the server. It defaults to C:\Music. Not \\server\music. What am I missing here?

Also can someone explain sync. ?

The Sync ON/OFF makes very little sense. It says "creating new ZONE group. I really don't see that. If I do sync. all it shows the same song album art under each system (1 and 2) but no sound from system 2.

Sorry but search did'nt really get me much. Nor the manual. thanks for any help.

On Windows XP, when you import your music, click the add button in Xlobby. When the browser window opens choose My Network Places, Microsoft Networks. Then choose your workgroup name (both PC's will need to be members of the same workgroup), if your music folder is shared out you should now see your shared music folder. Highlight it and click OK then click Import from xlobby.

You need to do this because on your fat client C:\Path To Music Folder\ does not mean anything, it won't be able to find anything.

Are you saying to do this on system 1 (server)?

The network share works. I can import the media and see album art, etc. (referring to system 2). I can also play music.
When I try to sync. the album art disapers and I get no audio. I can see the same song, artist, and album art in the sync. window, from the F2 menu. No sound though.

Yes, you need to use the UNC path on System 1, your server. If I remember correctly when your fat client on System 2 connects to your server it will import the databases from the server. If you don't use the UNC path to your music on your server but the default C:\Path To Music\ then when the fat client imports the music database from the server, it will be looking for the music on C:\Path To Music\ which probably doesn't exist on your fat client. But if you use the UNC path (something like \\Servername\Path To Music\) when your fat client imports the music database it will know the location of your music files.

For instance, if you wanted to browse to the AC-DC music folder that is located on your server from System 2 you would simply type in \\Servername\AC-DC into Windows Explorer.

Sorry, I can't help you on syncing as I'm currently not using this function until I move into my new house but there are some good posts if you use the search function. It sounds as though there are still some minor problems with zones losing sync with each other.

It has been a while since I tried to sync fat clients. To bad there isn't better documentation on that portion of XNET.

On the server (if I recall), press the Sync button so it is on. Highlight the client zone, then press Control Zone. I think what that does is it tells the server to control that zone (including winamp playback) when it is connected. I'm pretty sure it is done at the server side and not the client side, but as I said, its been awhile since I last experimented with it, but I'm certain it has something to do with that, either on the server or client. Oh, and make sure you turn off the Sync button when done.

Hope this was helpful.
