Control Xlobby over the Internet via web broswer?( WAN)

Postby showmethehtpc on Sat Nov 25, 2006 11:17 pm

Hello.

I was wondering if it was possible to control Xlobby over the Internet via web broswer?

I realize this can be done over the local area network(LAN) using the machines local IP address on port 8002 I think. For example it might be 192.168.1.101:8002 to access the web admin.

However, I'm wondering this was possible going over the internet(WAN). In other words, is it possible to control your xlobby server at home from your work computer or on a cell phone(which does not support wifi but does have a general internet connection from sprint)?

Thanks for your help.

Short answer...Yes

A Little bit longer answer...Yes, but you may have to allow access to the server, depending on how your network is setup. If you have a router/firewall, depending on how it is setup, you may have allow a certain amount of filtering, and port forwarding to be able to access that particular server. Basically from a computer outside of your network, you'd type in the IP address provided by your ISP. Then if your router "sees" this particular IP address with this particular port, and then forwards you to the Xlobby webserver.

Hope this was helpful.

*EDIT*
I should also add that you would also have to provide the port as well. So the field in your browser would be:
Code: Select all
http://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:8002

Where XXX are the different segments of the IP address.
8002 is the port as defined in the Xlobby web server setup (can be whatever you change that number too).

I use LogMeIn to control xlobby (and everything else) on my home machines from work, or anywhere. The free version works just fine. It requires a small app to run on each machine, but I've never had a problem with this interfering in any way with the performance. It seems very secure as well.

I don't think I could use the web-admin over the net, as I don't have a static IP address. Logmein gives me access to the whole machine, as well as xlobby, so I use it to perform all sorts of maintenance tasks on my home machines from work.
