Well I bought a sacrificial case.....and will start to work on the hardware side of this over the next few weeks. Stole the idea from others but look forward to it anyway. Interesting project.

I picked this model for my case. Floor standing was an option but just too big for my taste. I really wanted to focus on audio only.

Plan to replace the pushbutton and dial area with a small touch screen interface and retain the lower buttons for on/off and volume control.

Not sure what I am doing with the speakers just yet but likely will have 1 internal and rear-facing outputs for external as well.

I have created my own skins before (see MusicServer 5 thread) but might use portions of rika's since the retro styling is makes sense.

Comments and ideas welcome.

I cant really tell the proportions of that image, but I would suggest before you demolish anything you take pictures of all 6 views. Then you can restore or emulate its originality. (such as put in a lcd but graphics = the current tuner.) stuff like that. I would also make the speaker on the left be a hidden door for a dvd tray, or slot load would be cooler yet.

I will take a better pic of the "before" states once i have the box. It is still in transit from ebay. It is about 19" wide x 12 high and 12 deep I think.

I am not sure I am going the CD/DVD route since most of my stuff is digital already. I also will have 802.11 built in so adding content via FTP is simple.

Remote control via PPC could actually eliminate the need to have a touch screen but I want one on this project. Maybe I will do another even smaller one later with no external case mods.

The good news is a friend in IT gave me an old laptop with a broken screen to harvest for the guts. That means integrated features with much less heat to dissipate than a full desktop setup. Should be cool (pun)

What is the opinion on using the audio out that is built into the laptop vs. a small mini-amp?

You'll need amplification of some kind. The laptop's audio out will drive a set of headphones, at most. Or maybe you were just asking about the output's sound quality? Looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

I am thinking of using the T-Amp. It is small enough but needs a few mods that are well documented on the web. Only $25!
